Archer’s back stiffens. “This operation might take longer than a few weeks.”

“It’s not over?” I dare to ask.

Derek shakes his head. “No, we’re taking a small break while deciding our next move.”

“Is Seth okay?”

Archer scoffs. “Why would you care? He almost got you kidnapped. Do you know what would’ve happened to you if we hadn’t been there?”

I point a finger at him. “Control your tone with me. It wasn’t his fault that a couple of—” I close my mouth and, for the first time, ask a question, “Why were they trying to take Teddy? Is she okay?”

“The Zs have something against Seth,” Derek answers.

“How long has he worked for The Organization?” Archer questions.

I narrow my gaze and purse my lips. “That’s classified information.”

“I need to know if I should rely on him to do his job,” Archer replies, his eyes searching mine.

“You can trust him implicitly.” I shrug, feigning ignorance. “But what do I know?”

Archer’s lips twist into a sneer. “I wouldn’t trust him with anything. Since they’re safe, can you answer my questions now?”

My voice cracks with desperation as I speak, “Iseveryonesafe?”

“What?”

“My family. Are they out of danger?”

His gaze darts away as he lets out a deep sigh. “We’re still working on that.”

My heart sinks to the pit of my stomach, and I clench my fists in frustration and fear. “I’ll be glad to answer that question when this is over, Archer.”

He scoffs and shakes his head. “Finnegan,” he says sharply as he straightens his posture and raises his chin slightly. “My name is Finnegan Orson Gil.”

I arch an eyebrow and allow a small smile to tug at the corner of my mouth. “Really? Orson?”

“Do you have a problem with it?” he asks coldly, the anger in his voice unmistakable.

“Nope. It’s just funny.”

“Why’s that?”

I let out a chuckle and smile warmly at him, fighting the urge to burst into laughter. “We’re not discussing your past, remember?”

He looks at me curiously and waits for me to continue speaking before it finally clicks in his head what I’m implying, making his eyes go wide before they fill with rage. “What’s so funny?”

“You hated your middle name.” I grin, unable to contain the hilarity of the situation any longer. “You have the same middle name.”

I carefully swing my legs off the bench and grab hold of the crutches.

“It’s too soon for you to be walking,” Derek utters disapprovingly as he approaches me from across the room. “Please tell me you’re taking care of yourself.”

“To the best of my ability, I am.”

He snorts, his hand tightening into a fist before relaxing. “Bullshit.”

Derek wraps his arm around my waist before scooping me up effortlessly. “What are you doing?”
