“She’s fine.” Finnegan shrugs nonchalantly as if saying everything is under control. Unfortunately, I answer at the same time with, “We can’t find her.”

Finn shoots me an icy glare. “Fuck, could you at least pretend everything is okay for five fucking minutes?”

She pins us both with a glare, her eyes hard and accusatory. Her voice is sharp when she says, “You promised they’d be okay. Are you even looking for her?”

“We are,” Finn assures her, though his voice wavers in uncertainty. “We’re doing everything we can to find her.”

He shifts his body, then asks, “Have you had dinner yet?”

Piper opens her mouth and closes it before saying, “No, I was about to—”

“Let’s go,” he orders, already turning toward the door of the house.

“My best friend is missing,” she argues, her voice quivering. “I can’t just go and have dinner.”

“You have to eat,” Finn counters with an uncharacteristic softness in his gruff tone.

“Teddy is missing,” she exclaims desperately, tears streaming down her face as she glares at Finn, as if he can’t understand the gravity of the situation. “You, of all people, should be looking for her. Remember what happened to Myka?”

I have no idea who Myka is, but the pain in her eyes is absolutely destroying me. The raw emotion on her face is tearing me apart, and I can feel my heart breaking just looking at her. My heart aches with the weight of her sorrow, and I can’t help but feel deep empathy for her.

Finn’s voice rises as he speaks, his eyes growing wide with frustration and desperation. His lips quiver slightly, and his hands clench into fists. “How can I make you see that I can’t remember anything?” he shouts, the vein on his forehead throbbing. “Theodora James, or whatever her name is, means nothing to me, nothing. Myka? I’ve never even heard that name before.”

Piper’s gaze flits frantically between Finn and me, her eyes filled with a desperate urgency. Her voice trembles as she pleads, “We can’t lose her. Please, please tell me you understand. I beg of you.” Her voice breaks with emotion as her eyes well up with tears, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. She is visibly shaking, her whole body tense with the fear of losing someone she so deeply cares about.

I take a step toward Piper, my heart heavy with worry and concern. Gently lifting the crutches from her grasp, I pull her close, folding her into a tight embrace. “We’ll do everything we can, baby,” I whisper in her ear, my voice thick with emotion. “I promise you, we’ll find her. Together.”

Finn’s expression softens, and he clears his throat. “I give you my word,” he says with a warm smile he only shares with a few. It even reaches his eyes. “We’ll find her and bring her home. Now, can we please go and have dinner? I’m starving, and I can’t wait to have a nice meal together.” He extends his arm invitingly, ready to lead her.

“I hate to agree with him, but we all have to eat,” I say, but then turn to look at Finn with my mouth agape. “We’re going out to dinner?”

Finn crosses his arms over his chest. “You have a problem with that?”

I shrug. “No, it’s just so unlike you.”

He steps closer, his hand smoothly intertwining with Piper’s, his voice dropping to a low, playful whisper. “We do owe this lovely lady a night out, don’t we? And maybe a little extra attention, too,” he says with a hint of flirtatiousness in his eyes and a small smirk on his lips.

What’s with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? He’s usually frustrated, and when someone upsets him, he avoids that person. And here, in just a matter of minutes, his demeanor shifted in an instant. He went from lashing at Piper to flirting with her. Even though he’s right. Piper needs some distraction. I kiss Piper’s temple. “Come on, let’s go out for dinner.”

Piper’s brows are furrowed, and her lips quiver as she glances up at me, her eyes glimmering with unshed tears. She seems to be struggling to make sense of Finn. I can tell she wants all this to be over.

She looks up at me, her eyes full of questions, but the sadness in them is the most prominent emotion. I wish I could take away the pain she feels, but I can’t do anything.

The silence in the room is deafening, but she eventually mumbles, “This is so confusing and painful.”

I nod slowly and study her face, trying to comprehend the devastation in her eyes. My heart aches as I see the pain and hurt etched on her face. I want to reach out and hold her, to tell her that everything will be okay, but the words stick in my throat.

I think back to Finn and the way we met. He couldn’t eat, move, or speak, and yet months of care and patience helped him reclaim control of his mind and body. I remember the countless nights I spent by his side, the tears and frustration, but also the small moments of triumph.

And now, standing here, looking at her in so much pain, I know I have to try to do the same for her. We have to help Finn again. This time he has to remember how to love. How to love her. She’s been waiting for years, and she deserves to have him back.

With a deep breath, I remember that I have Piper to help me. Together, we can do this. We can help Finn remember how to love again.

“Everything will be fine. We just need to be patient,” I say reassuringly. “Let’s start with dinner, okay?”

She nods, gifting me a sad smile before we leave the house.
