“Yes, unless we can invade the house in New Mexico before Seth’s able to come with us,” I confirm.

He looks at the place Piper left empty and sighs. “Okay but try to spend less time in the office and more with Piper.”

My jaw clenches, and my voice rises. “She doesn’t like me,” I say almost bitterly.

Derek furrows his eyebrows and finally takes a seat. “Maybe it’s because of how abrasive you can be when she’s around,” he suggests tentatively. “Or she might be trying to understand you better.”

I let out a slow breath. “She has to stop.” I brush my fingers against my temple and close my eyes for a second. “It feels like she’s trying to dig into my soul, and I fucking hate it.”

He clicks his tongue sympathetically. “That sounds rough… you should consider going back to therapy. Your past is catching up to you after all.”

I grit my teeth, not wanting to hear what he has to say. “I’ll think about it,” I mumble, averting my gaze.

“So, what’s the plan for the next couple of weeks?” Derek asks. “Other than working.”

He looks at me expectantly as he waits for my response. I shrug noncommittally. “According to you: keep her company, get to know her… if she allows it,” I say, trying to sound optimistic despite my doubts.

Derek smiles and shakes his head. “You have to work on your social skills and stop groaning to everyone you meet,” he jokes, while I roll my eyes. “Should I bring the books again? We have several psychologists at the practice who help with social norms.”

“Asshole,” I reply with a smirk.

His eyes twinkle with amusement. “It’d be fun,” he teases me.

Fun. Everything inside me tightens as the meaning of that word warps and changes into something I can’t control. The anxiety coiling in my chest is more than just the fear of confronting the Zs. It’s about surviving the collision of my past and present without destroying myself.

What’s going to happen not only to me but to all the people I’ve met since I lost my memory? Will I lose them?

ChapterThirty-Three

Finn: Sorry we left abruptly.

Piper: Is everything okay?

Finn: We need to get ready to rescue Teddy.

Piper: Is she going to be okay?

Finn: I hope so.

Piper: Will she be coming to Colorado?

Finn: We don’t know yet.

Piper: How’s Seth?

Finn: Doing well. He’s a lot like you.

Piper: What does that mean?

Finn: You’re injured and don’t understand the word rest. And you don’t seem to care about yourself.

Piper: I care and so does Seth but staying in one place is not us.

Finn: I noticed. Are you binge-baking again?

Piper: How do you know I’ve been baking?

Finn: You baked a cake while I was there, and Dad mentioned you like to do it often.
