“Scared the shit out of him,” I said. “Chased him down with my car. Pinned him up against a wall. Threatened his life. Then told him to walk away. When he did, I got into my car and went after him again. I kept doing it. He finally broke down and started to cry.”

“I remember that,” Andy said. “He apologized to April. I think that was right about when she started taking those fighting classes too. Taking them very seriously. She hated when you left. I should have known. Goddammit, Seb.”

“What do you want me to say, Andy? She was a pain in the ass back then. I cared about her. Then she showed up here. All woman. You know?”

“Dude,” Andy said. “I don’t need to hear that.”

“What?”

“When you say the wordwoman, I know what you mean.”

“What?”

“Shapes,” Andy said. He cringed. “Body shapes. Parts.”

“So what’s next here? Beat the shit out of each other or what?”

“I haven’t decided yet,” Andy said.

He finished his beer.

He nodded at me.

I went into the apartment to get him another one.

And one for myself.

A beer right after breakfast felt very fitting this morning.

April waited in the kitchen.

When she saw me, she jumped.

“And?”

“What?” I asked.

“What’s happening?”

“Nothing,” I said. “I’m getting him another beer.”

“Oh.”

“April. He’ll be fine. We will be fine. It will all be fine.”

“That is such bullshit,” April said. “But I like hearing you say it.”

“Get over here, babe,” I ordered.

I slammed the fridge shut.

April jumped toward me.

She bit her bottom lip as I scooped her up.

I felt her heart racing as I held her.

“This is risky,” she whispered.
