As for me, I had plans.

I satin my car and looked at my phone.

Running late, huh?

That was okay.

Both Jago and Rome had already called and texted me from some beachside bar.

I didn’t respond.

I didn’t need booze. Or the beach. Or beautiful women.

I just needed this moment.

To myself.

This waiting moment.

A few minutes later, my phone beeped with a text.

You around, Sebby?

I swallowed hard and grabbed my phone.

I called April.

“Am I bugging you,Sebby?”

“You’ve been bugging me from the day I met you,” I said. “You okay?”

“Yeah. Just had to work a little late.”

“More pasta sauce?”

“Yeah, you’re funny. For the record, the idea I pitched is gold. I’m a marketing genius.”

“Well, I’ll have to try this sauce then. If it’s that good.”

“Yeah… you… should…”

What’s that, April? Should we get together and talk? Make some pasta and use this magical pasta sauce? You know if that happens, we won’t be talking. We won’t even make it to dinner.

The obvious question was easy.

Why?

Why weren’t we together?

That felt extra complicated.

“I’m working on some reporting stuff next,” April said. “Kind of feels like a small promotion. Or at least an opportunity for it.”

“Look at you,” I said. “I mean, nothing could be worse than those health bars. The ones that tried to kill me.”

“You ate it.”

“You gave it to me. You knew there was ginger in it.”
