“Is that a bad thing?”

“No. Not at all. Just interesting.”

“What makes it so interesting?”

Her name was Kailey.

She was a lawyer and had no time to date. No time to be in a relationship. She preferred to skip long walks on the beach and would much rather have a long night in bed.

Yet we were having drinks, feeling this thing out.

“I was actually at a few games this year,” she said.

“Big fan, huh?”

“Business only.”

I nodded. “Entertaining clients, huh?”

“Something like that,” she said. “What brings you out here like this?”

“I would safely say the same as you,” I said. “Busy.”

“Isn’t the season over?”

“Almost.”

“Isn’t your team… bad?”

Kailey cringed and bit her bottom lip.

I laughed. “It’s a tough sport. We have good players.”

“That sounds like something losers would say.”

“You’ve got a feisty mouth, huh?”

“You don’t know what my mouth can do,” Kailey threw at me.

“Ah, so now we’re getting somewhere. Are we going to eventually skip all these annoying pleasantries?”

“Are you just trying to get me into your bed and nothing else?”

“What do you want from me, babe?” I asked. “Should we talk about your birthday? Your holiday plans? Want to tell me your five year plan?”

“Perfect,” Kailey said. “A man who is good looking, cynical, but not trying to finger me under the table.”

“You don’t like being fingered under the table?”

Kailey smirked. “Does anything get to you?”

“Not really. Nothing is personal. We’re just two busy people that have a night free. What’s the shame in that? I say nothing. This isn’t some cheap movie where we’re going to have this magical connection and fall in love. That’s bullshit. In fact, all love stories are bullshit.”

“Take out the love and it’s just… fucking. Right?”

“Exactly. Is that a bad thing?”

“I don’t think so,” Kailey said. “As long as the lines are drawn.”
