“D and I got caught when we were like… I dunno, six, maybe. I’ve never seen my dad lose his shit quite like he did that day.”

“What were they talking about?” she whispers as if it’s still the Family’s biggest secret.

“That’s the worst bit. We had no idea. We couldn’t have told anyone even if we were stupid enough to share.”

“Jesus.”

“We learned, though. Never even slowed our pace when we passed his office after that.”

“I guess I should be lucky he didn’t catch me then.”

“Something tells me my dad’s got a bit of a soft spot for you. He’d have probably let you off scot-free.”

“Helps that I saved his son, huh?”

“Yeah, about that… how badly do I need to hurt Ant when I’m recovered?”

She chuckles. “You don’t. You should be thanking him that he listened to me. If he didn’t and I never…” She trails off, not wanting to say the words filling her head.

“So he listened and took you to The Empire,” I say, recollecting what I do know about this. “And shy little Evie Moore stood with her head held high in front of the city’s most dangerous men.”

“And woman,” she corrects, her eyes flashing with something I can’t read.

“Ah yes, Luciana. There’s a story there too, isn’t there?”

She bites down on her lip and nods.

“Go on then.”

Pride washes through me as she explains about standing in front of Damien’s desk and demanding that they accept the trade.

My fists curl in anger that they were even willing to put her in that position. But fuck, am I glad they did.

If they refused… well, I’d probably still be hanging on that cross right now.

“So they bundled me in a van, and whoever drove me there made a show of dragging me out and throwing me at their feet.”

“When were they going to deliver me and Zay back home?” I ask.

“No idea. I left them all to plan that. Not that it really mattered, because they had every intention of storming the place once the coast was clear.”

Leaning forward, I bump my nose against hers. “I’m in fucking awe of you, Evie. There aren’t many people in the world who would have had the strength to do what you did.”

“What is it they say?” she asks lightly. “Love makes you crazy.”

With a smile, I put all my effort into looming over her.

“I can live with being crazy.”

Her smile spreads across her face, making my heart flip over in my chest.

Dipping lower, I focus on taking her lips, but just before I close the space between us, she lets out a confession that rocks through every inch of me.

“Luciana is my aunt.”

All the air bursts out of my lungs as if someone just swung a bat at my back.

“W-what?”
