“You’re not a whore, Alex. What you do, it doesn’t make—”

“Did,” I correct. “What I did.”

Her eyes search mine for a beat, but she doesn’t respond.

“I told Dad that I’m done. No more jobs.”

A frown forms between her brows.

“But that’s your job. That’s how you earn—”

“Are you going to cam again?” I ask.

“Hell no. Theo has already deleted the evidence that I was ever there.”

I told myself that I would be cool about it if she wanted to continue. And I would have been. I’d never, ever stop my girl from doing something she loved. The fear that would come with it after what we’ve just lived through would be all-consuming. But I still wouldn’t stop her.

“Are you going to dance?”

She shakes her head.

“Well look at us, all unemployed,” I tease. It’s not true; I have other jobs. That one was just my most useful, and I guess exciting, one. Working security doesn’t really stack up in the thrills department, even if getting near another woman or guy sounds about as appealing as sticking a steak knife into my eye right now.

“I’ll find something,” she says in a rush, her eyes wide as realisation dawns. “I’ll talk to Jodie about—”

Pressing my fingers to her lips, I cut her off.

“Not necessary. There’s no rush to figure all this out. I have a job with the Family no matter what. It might just be nights doing security at one of our venues. And even if I don’t, I have money.”

“I don’t want your—”

“Evie,” I growl. “I love you. I love every single inch of your skin and hair on your body. Everything I am, everything I have is yours. Not out of obligation or charity, but because you are the other half of my soul. The Ben to my Jerry, the Bonnie to my Clyde. From here on out, we’re an us, if you’ll have me.”

Tears swim in her eyes as she stares back at me, her bottom lip trembling.

“Move in with me, Evie. I want you to be here with me. I want you to be the last person I see before I fall asleep at night and the first one I see in the morning. I want midnight kisses, early morning fucking, and everything in between.”

“Alex,” she whimpers.

“I mean it, Evie. I want you here. I want to start a life with you.”

“It’s crazy. We barely know each other.”

“That might be true, but I know everything I need to to know that I want you, that I never want to let you go. That you’re mine.”

“What if we drive each other crazy?”

“Baby, I think that’s pretty much guaranteed,” I laugh.

“But what if—”

“It’s amazing?” I ask, my heart thundering in my chest at the thought of her refusing and insisting on going to stay with Blakely and Zay at my dad’s.

“Are you sure you want that? Me invading your space with my sketchbook and pencil collections?”

“I want it. All of it. I want to come home from work and find you sketching on the sofa. I want to teach you how to make croissants. I want to embark on uni together and spend our Sundays studying naked.”

“Naked, huh?” she asks with a twinkle of naughtiness in her eyes.
