“You don’t need to pull anymore, so you can do what you really want and cover your arms with tats of cute puppies.”

“Fuck off,” Alex barks before wincing in pain as Gianna does something.

“If you want a tyrant, I’m sure Janice would be up for a home visit.”

“Hell no. If I never have to see that woman again, it’ll be too soon.”

“Who’s Janice?” I whisper to Calli.

“Come on,” she says, taking my hand and tugging me back to the kitchen. As we go, Gianna’s warning voice rings out. “No ink until I’ve announced you’re fully healed, you got that?”

“Yes, Mother,” Alex teases.

“Janice is a nurse on the Cirillo wing of the hospital. She has a special kind of love for the guys.”

“Don’t tell me, they’re terrible patients?” I deadpan.

Calli turns around from where she’s stopped at the coffee machine. “How did you know?”

“Do they ever follow the rules?”

“Only if they’re set by us. And even then, it’s probably fifty-fifty.”

“I can’t imagine Stella and Emmie take too well to being ignored.”

“Girl, you’ve already experienced what they’re like when it comes to driving their boys wild.”

“This is true.”

With a mug of steaming coffee, she hops up on the stool next to me.

“Shouldn’t you be on decaf?” I ask in concern.

“Oh, it is. I forced Alex to buy me a box.”

I can’t help but smile. “I love how close you all are. How much you care for each other.”

She returns my smile before her expression turns serious again.

“How’s he doing really? I know the jokes and smiles are a cover.”

“He’s…” I sigh, struggling to find the words. “Finding it all hard to get his head around, I think. His arms are bothering him more than he wants them to.”

“Before me, Daemon hadn’t shown his scars to anyone but Alex. And even showing me took time.”

“What did you do to help him accept them?”

She shrugs. “Nothing really. Just proved how much I love him. All of him. This world we live in might be thrilling and exciting, but we can’t forget the danger. We’ve all got scars; some are just better hidden than others.”

I nod, taking a sip of my coffee.

“Did Gianna talk to Daemon yesterday?” I ask.

“She did,” Calli confirms. “I’ve got to be honest, that was not what I was expecting to come out of her mouth when she said she needed to talk.”

“Can’t say I was expecting the confession either. She’s so sweet.”

“Appearances can be deceiving,” Calli whispers.
