I stare at her with my heart pounding in my chest.

“When we first found out I was pregnant, he was so keen to have a daughter. Said he was surrounded by men almost every waking hour and he wanted a mini me to spoil. It was so sweet and he seemed so genuine that I didn’t think to question him.

“I knew what he did for a living. I didn’t really like it. I wanted to care for people, to make them better, not be a part of something that was doing the opposite, but I was in love. So in love.

“The day I gave birth to two beautiful boys, everything changed.

“He was always overprotective of me, but the way he was with them, it was mind-blowing. Watching him with them melted my heart. He loved them so fiercely. I just had no idea that he was also trying to protect them.”

“Protect them from who?” I ask.

“His father.”

A violent shiver races down my spine.

“What did he do to them?” I whisper, although I’m not entirely sure I want the answer to that question.

“That’s not for me to tell, or to assume. I don’t know all of it. Just like I’ve spent my life trying to protect them, they’ve done the same for me, so I know that what I’ve been told barely scratches the surface. I’ve seen the evidence, though.”

“Evidence?”

She shakes her head.

“I’ve already said too much. You don’t need all of this on top of everything else. All I was trying to say is that Alex is strong, honey.” She covers my hand with hers and squeezes gently. “He’s resilient and smart and knows how to handle himself in situations like this. And the others are just as powerful and capable. Trust them to fix this.”

“Zay isn’t,” I whisper. “He isn’t any of those things.”

“And how do you know that? Until tested, we have no idea what we’re capable of. Just look at you.” Reaching out, she smooths down the edge of one of my bandages. “I bet you never thought you’d be able to do what you did.”

“It’s not the same. They… they could be anywhere.”

She holds my eyes, urging me to trust her.

“They will find them. And the first chance they get, they’ll take the place to the ground, sending everyone who’s done this to hell.”

“You promise?”

“I promise.” Her words hang heavy around us as the silence stretches on.

I’ve no idea where everyone else is, but they’re not anywhere close, that’s for sure.

“It’s three AM,” Gianna says as if she can read my mind. “Are you hungry? I can go and make you something.”

“I…” I pause, trying to focus on anything but the pain, both physically and mentally. “I don’t know,” I say honestly. “Food is the last thing on my mind right now.”

“I understand that, honey. I do. But the last thing either of them will want right now is for you not to be looking after yourself. They’re going to need you when they get back.”

I nod, knowing she’s right even if the idea of food makes my stomach want to revolt again.

“I’ll go and grab you a few things.”

With another squeeze of my hand, she climbs to her feet and walks to the door. But she pauses before she disappears.

“I know my son, Evie. He’ll fight through hell to get back to you.”

The second she disappears, pulling the door silently closed behind her, the tears hit.

She saw us together when things were good. She has no idea about the things I said to him, the names I called him after I discovered the truth. Will he still fight as hard to get back to me after I treated him like that?
