I snarl at him as something heavy is clamped around my ankles.

“We know what Ricardo and his men did to your brother for sticking his nose in their business. And guess what? We’re going to do the same to you. After all, identical twins do like to look the same, right?”

The second he finishes speaking, something cracks across my shoulder blades, making the skin burn red hot.

“No, please, no,” Zay cries, watching us with wide, terrified eyes.

“It’s okay,” I force through gritted teeth.

They’re coming. They already know where we are. They’re going to get us.

They’re going to get Evie. They might have even done so already.

While they’re in here, they could be sneaking her out.

“ARGH,” I cry this time when the whip hits lower, slicing into my skin.

Zay screams, his own pain at being forced to watch this outweighing his ability to stay quiet.

“Bud,” I say, through clenched teeth. “Squeeze your eyes tight and put your hands over your ears for me, yeah?” I ask. In reality, it’ll do very little, I’m sure. But I need to do something. Watching this is going to fuck him up. I should know. I’ve seen first-hand what this kind of treatment did to Daemon, and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Especially a young, innocent child. “Please, Zay. For Evie, yeah?”

He nods and does as I say a beat before the next lash cuts through my skin and I roar in pain.

They’re coming. They’re coming. They’re coming.

Closing my eyes, I repeat that mantra over and over as images of being with Evie play out in my mind, taking me off to a different place where these cunts can’t hurt me.

EVIE

The second I step foot in the kitchen, I’m engulfed in a set of arms.

Calli doesn’t say anything. She doesn’t make me any false promises, and I love her that little bit more for it.

“Whatever you need, I’m here. We all are.”

“Thank you.”

“Okay, so we have pancakes, waffles, cupcakes, cookies. You name it, we’ve baked it.”

Jodie reaches for my hand as I pass, and she squeezes it in support as I take the stool next to her.

“Umm… coffee?” I ask.

“Yes,” Calli hisses. “We totally have that too.” She hops around the kitchen like a little pregnant Duracell bunny.

“Is she okay?” I ask.

“Too much sugar,” Blakely says. “She was already eating icing when I came down earlier.”

“I couldn’t sleep. Daemon was out all night with the guys and I just… I needed to help.”

“Calli, you’re pregnant, you need to rest,” I say, concern twisting up my insides that she’s doing too much. That I’m putting too much stress on her and the baby.

“I promise, I’m okay,” she says, sliding a steaming mug of coffee my way. “I just need… I don’t know what I need. But no one will allow me to go running out there wielding a gun, so I’m baking. Everyone is going to be hungry, right?”

“You didn’t do this when Daemon was…” Jodie trails off, making me more than curious.
