My skin prickles with the awareness that I’m being watched, and slowly, I turn around and look at the chairs that were still pulled up beside the bed.

My breath catches when I find a dark figure sitting in one.

“It’s okay, Evie. It’s just me,” he whispers.

“No wonder everyone is terrified of you. Jesus,” I mutter, covering my racing heart with my palm.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you. Just… yeah,” he says, his eyes lifting to the sleeping girl behind me.

“She’s okay,” I assure him. “She came to lie down with me. I think we both might have underestimated how tired we were.”

The sliver of moonlight that cuts across the room allows me to see the smile that curls at his lips as I talk about Calli. It doesn’t diminish the dark look in his eyes, though.

“Have you found them? Got them? Anything?”

He sits back with a sigh. “Trust us, Evie. Let us do our jobs.”

“Easier said than done.”

“I know. Believe me, I do.”

“He’s okay though. You’d know if he wasn’t, right?”

“He’s fine. It’ll take more than this to bring any of us down.”

His words should reassure me, but I can’t help but feel like he’s saying them to make me feel better.

“I’m sorry,” I blurt. “About what happened when I first saw you.”

He chuckles darkly. “I told him it was a bad idea. Warned him that you’d take one look at me and realise you’d chosen wrong.”

I smile, wishing I could have experienced that brotherly banter before all of this.

“I love him, Daemon.” The words are out of my mouth before I’ve even thought them. “We fought before all this, and I never got the chance to tell him.”

“He knows. When it’s real, you don’t need words, Evie.”

I fall silent, the weight of that statement stealing any response I might have had.

“We’ve met before, you know that?”

“No. When?”

“That first night you were here working. We had a conversation in the kitchen. You thought I was him.”

My lips open to respond, but I quickly close them again as I vaguely remember the conversation in question. Although, I can barely recall what we said to each other.

“He was enthralled with you from the moment he saw you that night. He couldn’t take his eyes off you.”

My cheeks burn up, and I send up a silent thank you for the darkness.

“I had no idea he was looking for you after, though. We haven’t always been as close as we probably should be.”

“Things have been tough, from what I’ve heard. It’s understandable.”

“Know all my secrets, huh?”

“No, no. That’s not what—”
