The second I’m standing before him, his eyes drop to Alex’s shirt, and they darken a shade as sadness and fear flicker through them.

“So I’m assuming that Stefanos doesn’t know you’re snooping in his office?”

I bite down on my bottom lip and shake my head, shame rolling over me.

“Did you find what you were looking for?”

“No, I—”

A car engine rumbles close and both our heads snap to the window.

I’ve no idea who it is, but anyone else who drives a blacked-out car catching me in here isn’t a good thing.

“Come on, before someone else finds us.”

He takes my hand and tugs me from the room, stopping in the doorway to make sure the coast is clear.

Then, without any hesitation, he pulls me toward the stairs. We hit the top floor as the front door opens and heavy footsteps thud down the hallway.

“There you are. I thought you were going home,” Daemon says, relief clear in his tone.

“I bumped into Ant. We came to check in on Evie.”

“They upstairs?” Daemon asks, making my eyes dart to Ant’s.

He smirks at me before pulling his phone from his pocket and shooting off a message.

Calli’s phone dings beneath us.

“Seems that way,” she says. “You want a coffee?” she offers, not in the least suspicious.

“I can do it. You rest.”

“Aw, Devil Boy, you’re such a softie,” she breathes.

“And I’ve heard enough,” Ant says, dragging me forward. “Which room?”

I point to Alex’s door. “You haven’t been here before?”

“Not up here, no. Whenever we’ve hung out it’s been at his flat.”

Memories of the short time I spent there make me miss him and the little slice of heaven we found together all that much more.

“Hey, it’s going to be okay, Evie,” Ant assures me, reading my mind.

Pushing the door open, we walk inside Alex’s room. Ant’s eyes are everywhere, but they home in on those photos.

“So he’s always been ugly then,” he teases.

I laugh, but it’s strained.

I miss him so much. More than I ever thought it was possible to miss another person.

Before I realise it’s happening, a sob bubbles up my throat.

“Oh shit,” Ant breathes, rushing to my side and pulling me into his chest.

I’ve only met him once, and very briefly, but his unquestioning support tells me everything I need to know about the kind of person and friend he is.
