As if someone is expecting us, the second Trudi pulls to a stop, the front door opens.

My heart jumps into my throat and a surge of energy I didn’t think I possessed bubbles up from somewhere.

Throwing the door open, my feet hit the gravel and I take off running. And when the figure emerges, my legs only move faster.

He’s here and—

My body collides with his in a heartbeat.

“Whoa, steady,” he says, stumbling back a little.

Sucking in a deep breath, I savour his scent.

For a minute back there, I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance again.

His arms come around me as the sound of a car door slamming hits my ears.

But as grateful as I am for Trudi, she’s not my main focus right now.

Pulling my head from his chest, I look up, searching his eyes, letting them ground me.

My body screams as I do it, but I don’t care. I need him too much.

After the lies and the fighting, I just need—

I press my lips against his, desperate for a taste of him despite the fact he probably has no desire to do the same seeing as I’ve spent Christ knows how long running for my life in the woods.

He stills, his body turning to granite beneath me before a shrill female voice echoes around me.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

Everything happens too fast for me to process. I’m pulled back, ripped out of Alex’s warm arms before a small female steps in front of me.

It takes me a second to recognise her with her face contorted in anger, and it seems that she has the same issue.

Her jaw pops and her nostrils flare before realisation hits and her entire body goes rigid.

“Evie? Oh my God, Evie.” Anger forgotten, her eyes quickly sweep over me before I’m pulled into Calli’s arms. “BLAKELY,” she screams to get my sister’s attention, but I barely hear it. I’m already shutting down.

My body knows I’m here. It knows I’m safe and can stop fighting.

Footsteps come running before Blakely screams.

I’m transferred into her arms. She squeezes so tightly a little yelp of pain escapes my lips and she immediately lets go.

“No,” I cry, craving the warmth, the security of their arms.

“Evie, what happened? Who did this? Where’s Alex?”

Her words float around my head, but none of them register.

“Get out of the way,” a deep voice growls. “This isn’t helping her.”

Suddenly, my feet leave the floor, and when I look up, I find myself in his strong arms once more.

Tucking my face into the crook of his neck, I kiss his warm, comforting skin.

“I missed you,” I whisper, loud enough for him to hear. “I’m sorry I said all those things. I love you too.”
