“It seems you’ve timed your arrival perfectly,” the one who wasn’t speaking into his earpiece growls. “The show is just about to start.”

My stomach bottoms out at what those words could mean as another terrified whimper rumbles in my throat.

Please, please, please let them be okay.

As they wrap their free hands around the massive door knobs that I assume lead to the church's heart, I’m grateful they’re holding me up.

I’ve no idea what it is, but I have a very deep sense of something horrific being right on the other side of those doors. Despite everything I’ve told myself, since overhearing Stefanos and the guys’ conversation earlier today, I’m not sure I can do it.

And if I can’t do this, then I’ve failed them.

You won’t fail them, Evie. You’re here for them.

Have faith.

You will all get out of this.

I keep my eyes locked on the floor as the doors open, too terrified to look up and discover my fate, or the fate of those I love.

But I’m unable to remain naïve to what they’re dragging me into after we’ve stepped over the threshold and I look up

The second I do, it’s like the world is ripped clean from beneath me.

Alex.

A scream rips from my throat as I take in his battered and bruised body strapped to a huge cross behind the altar.

Tears cascade down my cheeks as I’m dragged forward.

As the distance between us reduces, I’m able to get a better look at what they’ve done to him—what they’re doing to him.

Blood drips from his arms and runs down his body, pooling on the floor beneath his feet.

“Oh, what? Did you think we didn’t have her?” a familiar voice taunts.

I try to look around to see who it belongs to, but the guards holding me don’t allow it.

Alex doesn’t react to his words. His eyes just hold mine.

He might not be saying anything, but I hear everything he’s thinking loud and clear.

I’ll kill every single one of these cunts for this.

Be strong, baby. You can do this.

As subtly as I can, I nod. I need him to know that I’m here, that I understand him and that we’re in this together.

Footsteps move closer before two men walk around my guards and make themselves known.

The second I see their faces, my knees buckle. They must feel me sag and decide to let gravity do its thing, because the next thing I know, I’m crashing to the unforgiving floor. I cry out, but with the gag between my lips, it’s nowhere near as loud as I need it to be.

“Good evening, Evie. Long time, no see,” Pete says. “Oh, how I’ve missed you.”

He steps closer as if he’s about to reach out and touch me, and I panic.

Falling on my arse, I kick out my legs as fast as I can, shuffling away from him.

Seeing as I’ve only ever seen him through a screen, it was easy enough to pretend he didn’t really exist. That all the lies he clearly spewed were the truth. That he was some sex-starved middle-aged man who lost his wife to cancer.
