Where the hem of her dress has ridden up, it exposes the holster, gun and knife that are hidden there.

She’s fearless. Beautiful. Everything I could only ever dream of being. And she’s sitting here with me as if she cares.

“You can ask me, Evie. Anything.”

Her eyes are soft and open, unlike when I first met her in Damien’s office. She was in boss mode then, but now, now it’s almost like she’s an entirely different person.

It makes me wonder how many people have ever met this side of her.

“You said… you said that you understood. H-have you been…” I trail off, unsure if I actually want her to answer this question or not.

“Sold?” she confirms. “Yes.”

My breath catches at her honesty.

“I was a little younger than you, but one day I was just plucked from my life and planted into a new one where I was expected to do all these things I’d never really thought about before with a man I didn’t know, who I didn’t really like, in a place that never felt like home.”

I stare at her, trying to grasp a thought that’s nagging at the back of my head.

“You’re… you’re not American, are you?”

She smiles. “I never did totally leave my British-ness behind. Even if they never liked it, I clung onto my accent with everything I had.” With each word she says, she sounds less and less American.

“I was the youngest of five sisters. At the beginning, I never questioned their disappearance. Dad always told me they’d gone off to start their own lives. And I guess in a way, he was right. But I was too young to ever question it.

“It wasn’t until it was my time to embark on my new life that the pieces of the puzzle I knew I was missing began slotting into place.”

“All your sisters had been sold too,” I whisper.

She nods sadly.

“Have you ever found them?” I ask, assuming from her position now that she’d have the power to get whatever she wants.

She hangs her head, her shoulders dropping. It’s all the answer I need.

“I’m so sorry.”

“I’d given up hope of finding any connection to my past once I discovered that they’d all gone, and I focused on taking down the men who were still allowing all this to happen.

“In doing so, I managed to find more than I ever could have expected.”

“They’re not really gone?” I ask hopefully, utterly sucked into this tale.

“They are. But I discovered who purchased my eldest sister and discovered that she had three kids before she died. Unlike the others, she wasn’t killed. It seemed she might have actually lived a somewhat normal life.”

I blink, studying her as she confesses her story.

“It’s you, Evie.”

“Me?” I ask, confused. “I’m what?”

“You were one of her children. You’re my niece.”

My chin drops in shock.

“I-I-I’m…”

Dropping to her knees, she rests her elbows on the bathtub and reaches for my hand.
