“Can’t say we were served up five-star luxury meals in there, baby.”

Guilt flickers across her face at my words.

“No, don’t do that. None of this is your fault. And just like you said, I’d do it all over again if it meant keeping you safe.” She nods in agreement, but I’m not entirely sure she accepts my words.

“What do you need?” she asks, focusing on the physical stuff that’s a little easier to process.

“I could really use a piss, and then whatever food you can get your hands on.”

“Well, lucky for you, you’ve got a small army downstairs who will make you—or order you—whatever your heart desires.”

“You,” I state simply.

She laughs. “You can’t eat me,” she says before her cheeks heat.

“Too fucking right I can,” I say confidently, despite the fact I’m unsure if I can get off the bed right now, let alone do anything else.

“Alex,” she breathes, shaking her head before her tone turns more serious. “Can you walk, or do I need to call your mum to catheterise you?”

My eyes widen, and I’m pretty sure my cock shrivels up at the thought alone.

“I can walk. There’s no need for any of that shit.”

“You should know, I almost told her just to do it,” she confesses with a smirk.

“What? Why?”

“Payback. Ideally, it would have been my parents, but seeing as I’m out of luck with them, yours will have to do.”

“Mum’s seen it all before,” I say flippantly. “She’d probably be proud of what a fine specimen she produced.”

She laughs. “You’re something else.”

“That’s why everyone loves me.”

She stills beside me.

“Alex,” she says, her voice suddenly more sombre than before. “You know that’s not the only reason everyone loves you, right? Yeah, you’re funny and a bit of an idiot, but there’s so much more to you than that.” I shrug, uncomfortable with where this conversation is going.

“You’ve been talking to Calli,” I surmise.

“Yeah, but I’ve been talking to the others too. You don’t need to hide, not from them. They’re your family. They love you.”

“And you?” I ask, happily deflecting.

“I… uh… I love you too.” She holds my eyes as she says it, and I feel the words right down to the tips of my toes.

“You’re my family too?”

“I hope so, because you’re a big part of mine.”

Reaching over, I ignore the pain and take her hand.

“There are so many things I want to say,” I tell her, “but I’m afraid that if I do, I’ll piss myself.”

“I guess the talking can wait a little while.”

Throwing her legs off the bed, she walks around to my side wearing nothing but one of my shirts.
