By the time Alex is done, my SOS message has been answered and a soft knock fills the bathroom.

“Come in,” I call as Alex side-eyes me.

I know he said he doesn’t want anyone’s help besides mine, but he’s crashing harder than he’d ever admit, and there is no way I’m taking his weight to get him back to bed.

Daemon’s head pokes around the door, and I have to give myself a second to remember that there are two of them.

“Hey, how’s the patient doing?”

“Stubborn, as you’d probably imagine,” I tease as Alex groans.

“Ready to get back to bed, Bro?”

“I can do it,” he grunts, shuffling back from the basin.

“Sure you can,” Daemon mutters, pushing the door wide to allow him through. But predictably, he only makes it four steps before his knees give out.

I gasp in horror as he starts to plummet, but Daemon is right there, stopping him from hitting the floor.

“You good?” Daemon asks not even bothering to hide the smugness in his tone.

Alex mumbles some kind of agreement before the two of them move out of the bathroom together.

“I don’t ever remember being this hard work when I was out of action.”

“That’s because you had a head injury and you don’t remember,” Alex groans in agony as Daemon lowers him to the bed.

“Nah, I remember my nurse perfectly fine” Daemon counters. “Perfect fucking angel,” he muses.

“Ew, dude, don’t get those sappy sex eyes when you’re talking about Mum,” Alex jokes.

“Fuck off.”

Daemon drops into the chair beside the bed with a soft smile playing on his lips. Something I’m not sure happens all that often. His relief to have his twin back is palpable. Hell, I feel it just as keenly.

“Seriously, Bro. How are you feeling?”

“Like I’ve been locked up, tortured, and hung from a fucking cross. How are you feeling?”

I cringe at hearing the truth laid out quite so brutally.

“Pretty happy. Did you see that perfect shot I had on that cunt?”

“The one whose brain matter you sprayed all over me?” I ask, continuing to cringe.

“The one and only. Thank me anytime.” Daemon winks.

“You really do enjoy killing people, don’t you?” I ask, utterly bamboozled by the whole thing. Until a few weeks ago, I hadn’t even wished anyone dead. Now here I am, having experienced what we just have and discussing this as easily as if we’re talking about the weather.

“Bad people who deserve it, yes. And that cunt more than deserved it.”

“You got them all, right?” Alex asks. “Derek?”

“He was there?” I ask, realising for the first time that I didn’t see him.

“Not that I knew.”

“That would be because he was locked up in the room next to yours,” Daemon explains.
