“He has skills too. The team is going to need fresh blood, after all.”

“Pretty sure Atlas and his massive ego has it more than covered for next season.”

Dad barks a laugh at my comment but says nothing more as he watches them.

My warning about Blakely and him teeters right on the tip of my tongue, but I swallow it back down.

“He deserves it. He’s got a bright future ahead of him.”

“They all do.”

We stand shoulder to shoulder, watching them, my eyes locked on Evie, his on… I think I’d rather not know.

“Promise me something,” I mutter.

He doesn’t respond, so I continue.

“Don’t make their lives any harder than they need to be. If cutting them free now will save any more pain, you need to do it.”

I glance over just in time to see Dad close his eyes tightly.

“I won’t do anything to hurt them. You have my word.”

Silence falls once more with that promise. All I can do is accept it and pray that he keeps it.

“I’m taking Evie home,” I state.

“Blakely and Zayden will be safe here.”

I nod. “I’m only a phone call away if he needs me.”

He nods in agreement, and I move back toward the door.

“Alex,” he growls.

“Yeah.”

“One day, you’re going to be an incredible father. I hope you know that.”

A somewhat nervous laugh spills from my lips, and I make the mistake of lifting my arm to rub the back of my neck.

Pain shoots off in all directions, and I quickly give up on the idea.

“We’ll see.”

“Go and spend some time with Evie. Heal. We’ll talk soon.”

I leave his office with a little more hope than I walked in with. I didn’t really know what I was expecting him to say when I told him I was no longer going to run jobs, but ‘I know’ wasn’t it.

Laughter floats into the kitchen a few seconds before the three of them emerge, all red-faced with wide, happy smiles spread across their lips.

My heart tumbles in my chest when Evie’s eyes light up—even more the second she sees me and comes rushing over. After reaching up to brush a quick kiss on my lips, she gently tucks herself into my side.

“Do you really have to go?” Zay asks, letting me know that Evie has already explained our plans.

“Sorry, little dude. I don’t actually live here anymore.”

“You could move back,” he says, his previous happiness dying.
