“Pregnant women often faint,” Saxon says. “Hormones cause blood pressure to drop, or she could have skipped breakfast, and her blood sugar could be low. Thanks, Marion. Sorry, is there any food around as well?”

“I’ve got some muffins leftover from the meeting yesterday.”

“Yeah, that’ll do.”

“I’ll go and get one.”

“Shouldn’t she be coming around by now?” Kip asks. “Should we call a doctor?”

“Her color is good. I’ll take her pulse.” Saxon picks up my wrist and presses two fingers on the inside.

My eyelids flutter open, and I look up at him. He’s studying his watch. I glance around. I’m lying on a sofa, presumably in the office next door. Kip has turned to look out of the window. The two of them are identical, although now that they’re in the same room, I can see that Saxon’s hair is scruffier. But that’s about it, apart from Kip’s glasses and the fact that they’re wearing different colored suits.

After about twenty seconds, Saxon looks up at me, showing brief surprise to see my eyes open.

“Hello,” he says again, lowering my wrist.

Kip turns and comes over. “Hey, Catie. How are you feeling?”

I moisten my lips. “I’m okay.” I try to sit up. The two of them go to help me, but I push them away and glare at them.

“I’m sorry for the misunderstanding,” Kip says. Saxon raises his eyebrows, and Kip adds, “She thought I was you.”

I sit up and lean against the back of the sofa. “Are you twins? Or is your company researching cloning?” I don’t try to keep the sarcasm out of my voice.

Saxon purses his lips, and Kip chuckles.

“Here.” Kip picks up the bottle of water, unscrews the top, and hands it to me. I take it from him and have a couple of mouthfuls while the two of them watch me. Suddenly, I’m conscious that my hair is damp and straggly, and I’m wearing hardly any makeup. Jesus, I must look a sight.

“Did you eat breakfast?” Saxon asks.

“Not this morning.”

“Naughty girl. That’s probably why you fainted. Marion’s bringing you a muffin. Have a bit of that, get your blood sugar back up, and I’m sure you’ll feel better soon.”

My face flushes at his words,Naughty girl. I’m not fifteen. “Are you a doctor?”

“No. I’m a computer engineer. I’m doing research into ways to improve IVF, so I’ve been reading a lot about conception and pregnancy, and talking to a lot of pregnant women. How far along are you?”

My face warms even more. “I’m not sure.”

“Who’s your midwife?” he asks.

“I don’t have one.”

“Your GP, then?”

I don’t reply.

He frowns. “Have you seen a doctor since you’ve been in Wellington?”

“That’s none of your business,” I snap, bristling at his questions.

He doesn’t argue with me, even though it’s obvious it could well be his business. He exchanges a glance with his brother, then pushes up to his feet as Marion comes back in carrying a chocolate muffin.

“Here you go, love.” She hands it to me with a serviette.

Kip walks a short distance away with her, and they murmur in a low voice. Saxon stands in front of me and looks pointedly at the muffin as he takes off his jacket and tosses it over a chair.
