Kip takes a step forward and peers at the box. “Pretty,” he says.

Damon also has a look. “Nice. Is it platinum?”

“Yeah,” Saxon says.

“Aw,” Kip adds, “the heart has a diamond. You old softie.”

Saxon doesn’t correct him, and my heart skips a beat. It’s made of fucking platinum, with a real diamond. Jesus Christ.

“Guys,” Saxon says. “You’ll make her faint again.” He leans forward, extracts the pendant from the box, and undoes the clasp. “Shall I put it on?” he asks.

“It won’t fit your neck,” Kip comments.

Saxon laughs and walks behind me. He lowers the pendant, then brushes aside the strands of hair that are lying on the back of my neck. I shiver at the touch of his fingers, and Marion turns away, hiding a smile. Saxon does up the catch, then releases the chain so the pendant drops a few inches onto my collarbone. “There,” he says.

I rest a hand on it, feeling the letters with my fingers. He knows how much meaning this has because it’s the name I started using the night I met him—the name I’ve taken as a symbol of my new life.

“Looks good,” he says. He backs away, his gaze on mine, amused at my bewilderment. “It is your birthday,” he points out. “You’d better get used to me giving you stuff.” He accepts a coffee from Marion, turns and walks into his office, then yells, “Catch up, guys!”

Damon and Kip grin at me, then pick up their coffees, follow him in, and close the door behind them.

“Peace and quiet at last,” Marion says. She comes over with a plate of cookies and puts them on the desk in front of me. “I’ll come and get you at eleven for morning tea with the other secretaries. I’ll get cake! That’ll cheer everyone up.” She smiles. “You okay?”

I nod, totally bewildered by the beautiful gift.

“It looks lovely,” she says. “Lucky girl.” Then she walks away, down to her own office.

It’s the first time in my life I’ve ever been called lucky, and certainly the first I’ve ever felt it.

I sniffle and snuffle, then blow my nose, and finally get to work, stopping about once a minute to touch and look at the pendant, and remembering his fingers brushing the back of my neck.

Chapter Eleven

Saxon

“Nice gift,” Kip says as he takes a seat in one of the armchairs and puts his coffee on the table.

“Shut up.” I’m already regretting not giving it to Catie alone, but I wasn’t thinking straight. My brain has melted after the events of this morning. I look at Damon, who’s taken the other chair, and who’s watching me with amusement. “And you can stop smirking, too. I’m guessing he’s told you what’s going on.”

Damon nods. “Must have been quite a shock.”

“One of many,” I mumble.

“How did the scan go?” Kip asks. “Did the dates work out?”

I sit on the sofa, have a large mouthful of coffee, then glare at them both. “Do you promise not to mock me?”

“No,” they both say, and chuckle.

I tip my head back and blow out a long breath. Then I lower it again and say, “It’s twins.”

As one, their eyebrows rise, so high on their foreheads it’s almost comical.

Then they both burst out laughing.

“Thanks for the sympathy,” I say sulkily.

“Twins…” Kip strokes his beard, trying to stifle his laughter. “Jeez, man. That’s harsh.”
