“Cove—”

“Living on the edge makes life worth living, Haven. Love you! Byeeee…” I hung up, answering Deacon, “Hey, babe.”

“Hey, beauty. Are you packed and ready to go?”

“I am.”

“Have I told you how much I’m going to miss you?”

“You won’t have to miss me. Haven’s sick, so it looks like I’ll have our room all to myself.”

“Is that right?”

“Mm-hmm. Maybe you’ll even get lucky.”

“Beauty, you’re not ready.”

I rolled my eyes. “Isn’t that my decision to make?”

“What kind of man would I be if I fucked you before you were ready?”

The man had the patience of a saint. We made out a lot, but he'd stop any time we got close to the next step.

“The kind who gives his girlfriend countless orgasms.”

“My cock doesn’t have to be inside you to do that.”

“Prove it.”

“We’ll see.”

“Does that mean you’re coming?”

“Maybe.”

“I’ll take it.”

Once we hung up, I drove to school just in the nick of time for the school buses to be leaving. After leaving my luggage with the driver, I went inside. I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the person I least expected sitting in the seat right next to mine.

“Oh. Fuck. No.” I stressed, shaking my head.

Jace smiled wide, folding his arms over his chest. “Cove, for this weekend, it’s Mr. Beckham to you.”

I glared at him. “You’re filling in for your father, aren’t you?”

He patted the seat next to him. “Saved it for you.”

“Old people sit in the front of the bus, G.I. Joe.”

He arched an eyebrow, ordering in a stern voice, “Sit.”

“I’m not your dog, let alone your bitch.”

“That’s where you’re wrong.” He tossed a lanyard at me that read, Mr. Beckham’s Assistant.

“Shit.”

“Now sit.”

“I didn’t sign up to be your assistant. Haven and I were your dad’s.”

“Well, I’ve replaced him, so now that makes you mine.”

“Absolutely not. I’m going to request a—”

“Cove! There you are,” Mrs. Myer exclaimed, walking over to me.

“I see you’ve found out that you’ll be assisting Mr. Beckham’s son instead this weekend.”

“Yeah, about that—”

“Since Haven had requested a joined room with her father—”

“Right, I forgot about that.”

“The only rooms the hotel can accommodate on such short notice are two adjoining rooms with a privacy door.”

“Oh… so I’ll have my own room?”

“Yes.”

Thinking back on Deacon, I figured it’d be much easier for me to sneak him in if I had my own room.

“That sounds great. Thank you.”

By the abrupt change in my tune, Jace eyed me skeptically.

“Perfect.” She smiled.

After she stepped away, I reluctantly sat down next to Jace.

“Remind me to yell at Haven for not giving me the heads-up that you’d be here.”

“She didn’t know.”

“Whatever.”

Disney Springs was only an hour away, thank God. I threw in my AirPods and paid him no mind until we pulled into the Springs. I was the first to break the silence between us, unable to hold back any longer.

“Why are you even here?” I refused to look at him, keeping my attention focused in front of me. “Don’t you have friends your own age? Why would you want to hang out with a bunch of high school kids?”

“I thought you were an adult?”

“You know what I mean.” I gestured to the bus. “This doesn’t exactly seem like your speed. Isn’t there a senior citizen event you’re missing out on this weekend?”

He ignored my dig. “I’m doing my father a favor. If you weren’t such a spoiled brat, you'd know what that was.”

I turned to face him. “What’s your problem?”

“Nothing. I’m just stating the obvious.”

“You know nothing about me.”

“I know everything I need to know.”

“Which is what?”

“You don’t want to go down this road with me, Cove.”

“Try me.”

When he didn’t say a word, I continued. “Fine. I’ll go first. Why do you always act like you have a permanent stick up your ass? Better yet, why are you always treating Haven like she’s a baby who can’t fend for herself? Have you seen her lately? She’s devastated about Hayes.”

“How many times do I have to tell you to mind your own damn business?”

“As many as it takes to get you off her back.”

“And you think this is the way to do it?”

“As a matter of fact, I do. You keep telling me to mind my own damn business. Well, you need to as well to make it fair.”

“Hate to break it to you, bunny. Life’s not fair.”

I jerked back. “Bunn—”

The school bus came to a quick stop, cutting me off. Before I could ask where that nickname came from, he stood, nodding for us to go. I did as I was told, mostly from being caught off guard by what he had just called me.

I shook off the sentiment, reaching for my luggage, but Jace grabbed it for me. I couldn’t help but notice how strong he was. He picked up my bag and his as if they weighed nothing.
