The amount of possessiveness that surged through me made me feel like a primal being, ready to fight any man that so much as looked at my woman with a hint of lust in his eyes. Even if it was one of my brothers.

I had thrown on a jacket just before we left the house, so I shrugged out of it and draped it over her shoulders.

“What are you doing?” she asked, her eyes still bright with laughter.

“I don’t want my brothers to stare at your chest,” I said in a gruff tone, being shorter with her than I intended.

She scowled. “Don’t tell me you’re going to be grumpy just because the rain got me wet?”

I sighed. Some things never changed. She was still calling me on my bullshit, and it had the strange effect of softening my demeanor with her.

A strand of wet hair was stuck to her cheek, so I gently brushed it back behind her ear. Staring into her eyes, I saw raindrops clinging to her dark eyelashes. Unable to resist, I pressed a chaste kiss to her lips before I replied.

“No, I’m not going to be grumpy,” I promised. “I just don’t want to see Dylan and Hayden ogling you during dinner. Will you wear the jacket?”

“Well, since you asked nicely…”

Her cheeky grin lightened my mood and I turned to the door, ringing the bell while she put her arms through the jacket and zipped it up. It was way too big for her, but there was something adorable about seeing her enveloped in my clothes.

Adorable?

I couldn’t remember ever thinking that about anyone or anything in my life. What was going on with me?

“Mia, it’s good to see you,” Grandpa said as he opened the door, leaning on the cane he now used to support himself.

“I’m here too, Grandpa,” I said as he ushered her into the house.

“Don’t take it too hard, Logan,” Hayden said, walking into the foyer as we entered. “He just likes her more.”

“Who wouldn’t?” Dylan added, right on Hayden’s heels. He flashed his most charming grin at Mia, who just rolled her eyes.

“Careful, Casanova,” she teased lightly. “I’m a married woman.”

“Such a shame.” Dylan clutched his heart dramatically, and I took the opportunity to sock him in the shoulder.

“Okay, let’s take it easy boys,” Grandpa chastised lightly. “We want Mia to feel welcomed into the family.”

“We are welcoming her,” Hayden said, with a mischievous grin. “I, for one, am prepared to treat Mia just like the sister I never had.”

Mia eyed him suspiciously. “I’m not sure I like the sound of that.”

She was smart.

“I’m wounded.” Hayden reached out unexpectedly and took Mia by the arm, pulling her toward the dining room. “Come on, sis. Dinner should be just about ready. You can sit by me.”

“Hey!” I called out, but Mia just laughed and went along with him.

“You know he’s just trying to rile you up to get a reaction out of you, right?” Dylan asked, and I shook my head.

“He’s begging to have his ass kicked,” I muttered, wondering when I’d become such a jealous, overly-protective man.

Oh, yeah, since Mia was now my wife.

Dylan didn’t say anything in front of our grandpa, but I could tell by his sidelong glance that he was remembering just two days ago when I told him that what was going on with Mia was still nothing but an act.

With each passing day, it was getting more and more difficult to believe that lie.

We entered the dining room to find that Hayden was indeed in the seat beside Mia. I sat down on the other side of her and sent him a warning glare. I knew that Dylan was right, and Hayden was just messing with me, but that didn’t stop my newly developed possessive side from rearing its ugly head.
