“I told you I was,” Ash said.
Nix dropped his head. Oh Ash was in trouble now.
Ramon leered into Ash’s face. “Then you owe us money, jackass.”
Ash looked the guy straight back in the eye. “I only just joined-”
“Wrong answer,” Ramon said and slapped Ash across the face.
Ash put his fucking ninja skills to good use and braced himself.
“What I mean is, I’m sure the Prez can sort this out-”
Ramon slapped him again. “Better, keep talking.”
“Black Coyotes might be able to compensate you-” Ash was garbling now.
“Well shit, so the rumor is true, Black Coyotes are rich as thieves? Funny that, as they stole from us!”
“I-”
“So you’re gonna be our little insurance policy.”
“How, what?” Ash frowned.
“We’ll take payment in flesh. Your flesh.”
A blade flashed. Ash’s face went pale.
Nix’s voice surprised himself. He was plunging in. “Slow down, guys…” Why the fuck was he speaking up, getting involved? The look on Ash’s face, Nix answered himself. That’s why.
“And who the fuck are you? Another Black Coyote?” Ramon frowned up at Nix.
“Just pointing out the obvious, ‘cause, shit, I’m bored, if you’re talking of taking flesh, that’s no way to get a payment schedule negotiated with the Prez now, is it?” Nix tried to sound casual.
Ramon scowled up at him. “Fuck off.”
Nix shrugged. Ash whimpered. The hold on his hair was clearly beginning to bite.
“Just saying…”
“You’re a member, too!” One of the other Latino’s declared.
“Hell no, I just-”
“Get him, too!”
“Fuck!” Nix roared and two guys descended on him.
But that was when Ash made his move. A duck, a dodge, a jab to the throat. Ash’s signature move it seemed. Ramon gurgled and crumpled.
“Fight!” Someone yelled behind Nix. Someone came at Nix, he lashed out. He felt arms grabbing him, punches to the stomach.
That riled him. He roared and lashed out some more.
He heard Ash’s rhythmic breathing beside him. It spurred him on, gave him a beat to follow. A structure.
But Nix’s rage couldn’t dance neatly like Ash’s could. He was the Incredible Hulk, flailing, boiling over.
