“But-”

He cut her off. “I get it, you take one look at me and think I wouldn’t make a good father, that I’m just a trouble maker, a bad guy, that I’m no good, that I wouldn’t be sticking around, huh? No one stays in the end, huh?”

Penny pursed her lips. “It’s not that, Nix, I’m-”

“I know, the tattoos, the piercings, my attitude in general? You think I’m going to shirk responsibility? Penny, baby, let me lay it out for you. I live in a fucking five star hotel with a baby crèche in my front room. I have access to a night nanny, and about 100 pairs of hands who would all willingly change diapers and be up at any time of the night to feed or rock or do whatever the fuck a baby wanted to do. Sure, I don’t have a mortgage and a steady job and a car and a pension. I did time, yeah, I drink and I gamble and I’ve hurt people and I’ve stolen shit… but no kid of mine would need anything ever-”

Penny regretted her initial reaction. “Nix, I’m sorry-”

“I got the most important thing of all. Love. I’ve got all the love this baby would need. Penny, if you're pregnant, then you’ve having my baby and the MC will take as much care of you and our baby as you want. Maybe you’ll fuck with Lyle after all, fucking great. If we still fuck together, then fucking great, too, if not, no stress, doesn’t change how much love I got to give to my baby.”

She looked in the dark room at the man in front of her. Covered in dark ink of terrible images and silver studs popping from every body part. She was floored by his response. Everything she’d assumed peeled to the floor. Like a layer of scales. Dry and useless and actually not very well stuck on in the first place. To reveal something shiny and new and beautiful underneath.

“So, you wanna have a baby?” he asked her, a mischievous grin on her face.

She bit her lip and nodded.

“Fine by me. Come back tonight, Vixen, and I’ll fill you up again, huh?” Nix shrugged, as if he were suggesting she pop back around to borrow a cup of sugar.

She could barely contain the smile that spread across her face. He made it sound so simple. So obvious and easy. It wasn’t any of the talk of, we need to be earning X and have Y savings and Z disposable cash at one time to even consider the childcare fees and the medical cost. She was bored by the memory of her ex-husband's endless ramblings and excuses.

“Now, I gotta go to work,” Nix said, flicking the towel off, exposing his beautiful body briefly before shrugging into a clean black T-shirt and jeans.

She sat up a little in bed, coming down to earth with a bump. “Oh, right… I should get going then…” she tried to hide her disappointment as she searched for her panties. It was 4:30am, how the hell was she going to get home?

“Baby, are you sad?” he said, coming to sit next to her on the bed, kissing her forehead affectionately, mild amusement lighting his features. He was easy-going, so giving, so kind. But she imagined this was one of his many layers. No golden retriever of a guy had this many tattoos.

“Honestly, yes, a bit, I thought we could… do it again-”

“Oh, Penny.” He smiled devilishly. “Your night isn’t over. I love your hunger for this. Stand up, let me see you.” He pulled her lightly from the sheets and Penny let his warm, strong hands drag her out of the bed and into a standing position in front of him.

He looked her up and down with satisfaction in his eyes. “You want more, huh?”

She bashfully looked down, at her toes, painted red, at her naked body. “Yes, Nix, I want more.”

“Good, you are going to get more, Penny, baby,” Nix said, and before she realized what was happening, he had dragged her over to the front door of his bedroom.

“I… Nix, I’m not dressed-”

“You don’t need to be dressed for this, my hot little Vixen.”

Penny tried to insist. “My clothes, my things!”

“Come back for it after.”

“After what?” Penny exclaimed, but Nix had already opened the door and pulled her out into the hallway.

They were both now naked, in the hallway. Nix rapped on the hotel room door opposite his. Smiling, he gave her a cheeky wink.

Penny stood there, the hallway significantly cooler than his room had been, mouth open, unable to believe what was happening.

Nix knocked again. A grumble from inside sounded then the door swung open.

Penny blinked. It was the other biker from the cafe all those months ago. The smaller, younger one. She hadn’t caught his name but she’d remembered him. When her ex-husband had been berating her, he’d stepped forward, put a hand underneath her chin, bringing her face up, looked into her face square on and said, “Never let anyone tell you who or what you can fuck. You fuck what you like, sweetheart, you want more than one dick, that’s fine, don’t be ashamed of that, and never apologize for it.”

And Penny had felt solidarity and a sense of kinship. A sense of being with people like her. People who felt the same as her. People who liked what she liked, longed for what she longed for. She realized it now with Nix, too. Yes they looked like they were worlds apart. But they shared something deep down, something raw and untamed that was deeper than clothes and material stuff. It was the very essence, the core, the rhythm of what made their hearts beat. And Penny, Ash and Nix’s beat to the same drum.

Ash looked distinctly more tired than when she had last seen him. He was also naked. Was everyone in this MC clubhouse awake and naked at 4:30 in the morning?
