They all stared back at her, serious-faced. “We claimed you Penny, we claimed each other, you’re ours now. All of ours. And the baby, too. You said it yourself to Colt, we are all daddies.”

“What we originally said, the deal-”

Ash cut in, “Raising the stakes. We’re all in now, Penny. Your choice, do you stick or twist?”

Lyle

“Sir, can I please request… sir, you can’t park there, sir!” The receptionist gave Lyle the once over, and curled her lips disdainfully as Lyle strolled through reception to take a seat in the waiting area. He didn’t stop to check in, he made a steady beeline for the other person already there, Penny. He’d had to practically beg to borrow the van to drive himself there, fucking Colt. But here he was.

She looked up at the sound of the receptionist, and Penny smiled warmly when she noticed him. Fuck, it felt good, someone actually wanting to spend time with him. Most people rolled their eyes when he approached. He didn’t blame them though. What the fuck did Penny see in him-

“Sir, can we help you?” A male receptionist blocked his path.

“Nope,” Lyle said dismissively, and went to keep walking straight to her.

“Sir, I think you must be in the wrong place-”

Lyle frowned and looked the guy up and down. “Nope,” he barked back again. He didn’t want to shoulder barge this guy out the way but he would if he had to.

“I’ll ask again, I’m sure there is nothing for you here, please leave,” the receptionist said sternly.

Lyle squared his jaw. “I’m pretty sure I’m in exactly the right place. Knocked my woman up, getting a scan-”

A small, horrified intake of breath sounded from the waiting room as a whole.

The female receptionist stood beside her male co-worker, arms folded across her immaculate white blouse, her made up eye lashes flicking down as she scoured her gaze down him.

He stood, and took it, with a mocking, sarcastic sneer. This is what people did to him. They judged. They saw a guy with long hair and tattoos, in a leather jacket. Boots and jeans. A big motorcycle that he shoudn’t be riding, but fuck Colt and fuck his rules. Lyle wasn’t drunk, he hadn’t drank all morning so far. Fuck he’d wanted to but he hadn’t. Because today was important. It was Penny’s ultrasound. He stared them both down with a sarcastic, smug grin on his face. Not bothered by their scorn. He wasn’t bothered by them. This happened all the time, this is what everyone did. They saw him and they found him lacking. He swallowed and fought the urge to bolt suddenly. Fuck.

“Hi there!” Penny’s breathless, overly sunny voice trilled. She bounced up next to Lyle’s elbow. “I’ve already checked in, Ms. Rafferty, for a scan with Dr. Tilbury, I called ahead to check whether there was adequate parking and I was told there was space for all types of vehicles…” Penny was trying to diffuse the situation. Lyle was happy to let it blow up.

The two receptionists did double takes between Lyle and Penny. And back to Lyle again. For fuck’s sake. He got it, he wasn’t worthy of her. He was way out of his league with her, punching above his class. And Penny was looking super shiny this morning. She’d gone home, fixed herself up from the sex-touseled, casual thing she’d been earlier. She was in smart trousers, heels, and a silky floaty top. Hair curled, make up on. Glowing. He got it, he was a washed up old wreck next to her.

“You’re one of the Black Coyotes, aren’t you?” the male receptionist said in a hushed, horrified tone. He looked at Penny. “And you are the former pharmacist’s wife? He divorced you, didn’t he?”

Penny squared her jaw. “Not that it is any of your business, I divorced him-”

“We don’t want your club frequenting our premises-” the female began.

Lyle cut them off, “Colt and April came here, didn’t they?” He tried to remember. He had been so sure, now doubt was swirling.

“We banned them,” the woman said matter of factly. “Dr. Tilbury doesn’t want anything to do with your dirty biker gang-” she spat.

Lyle raised his eyebrows. “Oh, someone’s sleeping with the boss then, huh?”

The woman blushed bright red, and her male colleague did a double take to her. “Charlotte! Really? He’s a married man!”

Lyle tutted, his intuition was right then.

“That’s not, I mean…” the woman blustered.

Penny held up her hand. “I have an appointment here and I will be seeing-”

“There is no way you will be seeing-”

“I’ll do it.” A quiet yet authoritative voice came from one of the treatment rooms. Lyle and Penny whirled around. There was a younger Asian woman standing there, arms crossed. An arm with a tattoo on it. And blue highlights in her dark hair.

“Dr. Tilbury hasn’t signed you off yet as having passed your probationary period-” The woman hissed back. Clearly this female receptionist thought she ruled the roost. Not anymore, Lyle thought.
