Colt flexed his jaw. “No, it's a brain tumor. At the front, hence… the eye situation. It’s growing rapidly.”

“But… his eye?”

“Precisely. No one’s sure… he might not have much longer left.”

“Fuck.” Carmelo looked back at the happy-go-lucky kid in the ice cream van. Then Carmelo noticed he was wearing a black leather vest. A new black leather vest, the kind usually reserved for prospects.

“Colt, how old is he?” Carmelo chided.

Colt shrugged.

Carmelo tutted and rolled his eyes. “He’s too young for MC life, Colt, come on-”

“You wanna tell him that?” Colt whirled around, suddenly fierce.

Carmelo backed up. “I get it, that could be a difficult conversation-”

“Kids dying, Carmelo.”

Carmelo waved a hand at Ash and Nix. “This is no place for a kid, you’ve got blowjob city going on and it’s not even dark yet, you know how much more kinky shit goes down after dark-”

“Yeah and you’re normally right in the middle of it, Carmelo.”

Carmelo sighed and dipped his head. “I know, I know.”

“Come on, let him spend his last few years happy. Sophie’s up for that, his parents are up for that, he’s moved out of their house, he was too much after it came out he’d been running drugs for the Demonios-”

“If this lifestyle makes him happy, then fine, but come on, how old is he, fifteen?”

“He just turned sixteen.”

“Oh yeah, that makes a difference,” Carmelo said sarcastically.

Colt rolled his eyes.

“Is he in school?”

Colt bit his lip. “Dropped out.”

Carmelo blinked. “Cool,” he replied sarcastically, again.

Colt steered Carmelo away from the ice cream truck and toward the bar. “The limo driver-”

Carmelo sighed. “He said he wasn’t going to press charges, and then he passed away, after catching some bug at the hospital. Phantom is officially off the hook.”

Colt nodded, looking satisfied.

“So give me the details for where I can go get Lyle tomorrow. I’ll bring Ash and Nix, and we’ll fuck him over so bad he'll wish he hadn't woken up again,” Colt muttered darkly.

Carmelo gulped. He didn’t want to be in Lyle’s shoes tomorrow.“Yep, I’ll text you.”

Colt nodded. “Great.” His eyes caught on someone in the crowd. Carmelo followed his eye line and saw April, bouncing a fussing baby Chase, tipping her blonde hair back, that was curled for the occasion. Colt smiled.

“All okay?” Carmelo asked, nodding to April and baby Chase.

Colt tilted his head and took a while to respond. “It is now… got a night nanny, and April’s seeing the therapist.” He looked back at Carmelo. “Postpartum depression, she’s doing fine, some decent sleep is helping, and the guys have all pitched in, the therapist, too, is doing her good.” Colt shrugged, his eyes full of love for the blonde woman smiling and snuggling with the little baby boy. Carmelo looked on, the strongest couple he knew, that bittersweet pull of wanting threatened him again. Carmelo cleared his throat.

Colt clapped him on the back. “Relax, enjoy the party, catch you in a bit,” he said, and walked off toward April.
