“But you can have it with her.” She throws her hand out toward the door. “Some one-night stand that got knocked up.” I grind my teeth at how she talks about Emi. “You wouldn’t even have sex with me without a condom, Shaw!”

I tamper down my comeback, trying to keep her calm, not wanting all my office to hear about what is sure to be the start of her exploiting herself sexually. “With good reason.” We both had numerous partners outside of when we were together.

I know how Lizzie works; I can read her like a damn book, and we’ve played this game far too long for me not to recognize every move she makes. It’s a shame I’ve been too weak to put a stop to it before now. The regular sex and someone on my arm at events that could swoon the birds from the trees became an easy convenience. Until things would come to an abrupt explosion of emotions.

She reaches toward my cock, but I grasp her wrist to stop her. Biting my cheek, I keep my voice low as I spit the words out. “I’m a married man, Liz. Get that through your thick fucking skull. My cock belongs to my wife and my wife only.” I throw her wrist away, making her glare back at me in malice.

You’d think I’d been clear enough, but when she steps back with a smile tugging at her plump lips, I know she’s only getting started.

Iknock back another whiskey and slam the glass down on the table while holding my hand up for another.

Tate drops down opposite me, scanning my face. “How’d it go?”

“Brutal. Absolutely. Fucking. Brutal.”

His jaw drops open as the waitress places my drink on the table. “Bring me the bottle,” I clip in her direction.

“What the hell happened?”

“She crawled on all fucking fours, then tried to seduce me. When I called security, she refused to put her dress back on. Instead, she took her fucking bra off, man. In front of the security.” I clench my jaw at the shame, and my head pounds with tension, but I ignore it. I take another swig of my drink and continue on with the story. “Her tits were hanging out. She wrapped the bra around her hand and started waving it around like a damn flag. Telling the whole floor how I refused to let her get bigger tit implants.”

Tate stares at me in shock. His face would be comical if I wasn’t so pissed.

“She was insane. Out of control. One of the worst and most embarrassing situations of my entire life.”

“No fucking way!” Tate gasps, horrified.

I take another drink. “Way.” I nod, just as fucking mortified. At least he didn’t have to watch his ex get hauled out of the building with her panties around her ankles and her stringy hair between her fingers making her resemble an even more deranged Cruella de Vil.

“God, I hope the baby is okay. She seemed so fucking normal.” His gaze is despondent as he searches for the right words. “So nice.” He grimaces with a shudder. “That shit can have a real impact on babies mentally too.” He sighs as I struggle to understand what he means. “You’re gonna have to get the baby checked out. You need to take the kid to a specialist as soon as it’s born, Shaw,” Tate tacks on with concern as I stare at him dumbfounded.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” I quip back, wondering if my friend has indeed lost the damn plot like my ex.I mean, Jesus, am I the only sane one here?

“Huh?”

“Why would the baby have problems?” I grit out, annoyed he even implied it in the first place.

Tate moves closer and lowers his voice. “You just admitted your wife crawled across the fucking floor, Shaw, and exposed herself to everyone. That’s not normal.”

I jolt in shock at his words. He really is a dumbshit. “No. I didn’t.” I shake my head. “I was explaining how brutal it was when Lizzie came into the office and I tried to let her down.Again.”

Tate rears back, wide-eyed. “Oh. Well, I was asking how the scan went.”

My mind plays catch up on his words before panic courses through me. “Oh shit.” I stumble to stand. “I fucked up.” I turn around in a circle like an idiot. “Oh shit, I fucked up real bad.”

“Why, what did you do?” Tate watches me wide-eyed.

“I...” I turn again on the spot, as though the answer is going to jump out at me. “I forgot about the fucking scan.” My chest heaves with disappointment. “I forgot about Emi. Shit.” I tug at my hair, wondering how the hell the day could have started off so incredible, only to end so fucked up.

I grab my jacket and make my way toward the door.

“Jesus, Shaw. Even I’m not so dumb as to forget my own baby’s scan.”

I spin to face my idiot friend. “You don’t even have a baby, dipshit.”

“Not yet!” He grins from ear to ear and wiggles his eyebrows in jest. I exhale and head out the door, hoping all the progress I’ve made with Emi doesn’t come crashing down on me.
