SHAW

“They said it was okay you came, right?” My leg bounces in the footwell of Owen’s SUV.

“Yes. Chill the fuck out.” Owen side-eyes me while keeping one hand on the steering wheel. “Did you tell Lizzie yet?”

I grimace at the thought of telling my on-again-off-again girlfriend I got another woman pregnant and, not just that, I’m about to marry her.

It appears Red, whose real name I believe to be Emilia, is part of the Varros family. One of the five Mafia families living in New Jersey and the surrounding areas. Luca is a Capo, so not even the leader of their organization, but holy fuck, the dude is intense and deadly, according to Owen. He went on a killing spree to wipe out the entire bloodline of an opposing Mafia family.

Owen explained I fucked up majorly when I screwed Emilia and if I want to stay alive, I have no choice but to end things with Lizzie and do exactly as Luca says.

I can’t even get my head around the fact that Emilia is pregnant and I’m going to be a dad. It’s not something I considered, not anytime soon anyway. Lizzie has been after an engagement ring for as long as I can remember, and our relationship has been a constant battle because I refuse to take the next step. Hence the reason I haven’t told her I’m about to do just that, with a stranger no less.

“And you’re sure there’s no way out of it?” I ask for the hundredth time.

Owen glares at me and not the road, causing me to swallow with nervousness. “No. Not unless you want your body parts floating in the Hudson.”

I know he’s not joking. I know what the Mafia is capable of.

I scrub a hand over my head but sit forward as the SUV comes to a halt. Owen winds down his window at a security post, and I watch in awe as we are waved on by men with machine guns strapped to their chests. Fucking machine guns.

A wave of panic rushes through me. “Jesus.”

Owen’s jaw tightens as he sends me a warning glare. “Exactly.”

EMI

I stare at the meal in front of me, unable to take another bite, and push the vegetables around with my fork.

A loud thump on the table makes the cutlery clatter. “Fucking eat!” Luca seethes.

I turn to face him and his narrowed eyes, but as my lips part to speak, I’m saved by Shaw.

“Don’t fucking shout at her like that.” My eyes bug out at his defense for me.

“Jesus,” Owen mumbles, dropping his head and shaking it, as though he’s annoyed with him for questioning Luca.

When I listened to Luca discuss Owen, I overheard that he runs the security side of the company owned by Shaw and his friends. I can’t help but wonder if our impending marriage is part of an elaborate business plan of Luca’s or out of some loyalty to Owen, who he’s done previous business with.

Owen is taller than Shaw, with broad shoulders, and handsome. His blond hair is cropped, and his bronze skin is littered with tattoos.

Luca coolly dabs his napkin at the corner of his lips and ignores Shaw’s outburst. His voice is much calmer this time. “Emilia. Eat your meal, the baby will need feeding.”

My stomach flips thinking about the baby needing food I’m struggling to stomach, so I pick up a green bean and place it in my mouth with a tight smile toward Luca.

“Good girl,” Shaw praises from beside me, making memories of our night together come flooding back. I can’t help the whimper that slips out on his praising words.

“Did you finish with this woman of yours?” Luca asks, not in the least bit subtle or caring. I can’t help but flinch at the thought of Shaw with another woman. Jealousy and hurt swim in my stomach.

Shaw clears his throat and averts his gaze. “Not yet.”

Emotion clogs my throat at the thought of sitting around a dinner table, pregnant by another woman’s partner. I squeeze my eyes closed as a wave of sickness rises in my stomach.

“May I be excused?”

Luca scans my face. “Not yet. Eat.” He points his fork toward my plate.
