Owen steps forward. “Luca. Emi and Shaw had a disagreement, she left their home yesterday.”

Luca’s face transforms into some sort of deranged savage. His face reddens, his veins protrude, and his eyes bulge. “What fucking disagreement? And why the fuck don’t I know about my sister leaving the property?” he bellows at me while I stand there stoically still, trying to grasp onto the fact that Emi isn’t here. And Luca doesn’t know where the hell she is.

Luca storms back to his desk and lowers his hand beneath it. I can only imagine he’s pushing a button to alert security of assistance. Sickness swirls in my stomach at the thought.

“Answer my fucking questions!” I jump when he screams across the room at me before moving so fast I don’t know what’s happening. He has me pushed against the wall with his hand wrapped around my throat like a coiled viper. He presses on my pulse points, making my vision blur, the warning evident.

Owen steps forward to intervene, but the office door bursts open with Maxim and another guy I’ve never met rushing inside.

“What the fuck’s happening?” The guy I don’t know speaks to Luca, but it’s Owen who answers.

“We came to speak to Emi. But she’s not here.”

“Where the fuck is she, then?” Maxim asks. I dart my eyes over to his. His panicked expression makes my blood curdle. He taps away on his phone, ignoring my situation.

“I’m going to fucking slaughter you, strozno.” Luca presses harder, and I swear I can feel the veins behind my eyes popping as my breathing becomes a struggle.

“Brother, let him speak.” My vision blurs as I witness the other guy put his hand on Luca’s shoulder. Muffled voices are spoken as I drop to the floor, gasping for breath while chaos ensues around me.

I grasp at my throat as I try to steady my breathing, the desperation to fill my lungs with air.

As my breathing regulates, I stumble to my feet. “You fucking psychopath. You nearly killed me!” I spit out through labored breaths with equal hatred.

Luca flies toward me once again, but Owen and the other guy step in his path, blocking him from touching me.

“Her tracker is switched off,” Maxim declares, and all eyes swivel in his direction. Panic rushes through me, making my legs unsteady once again.

“Tell us exactly what happened,” the guy cuts in, his eyes flicking from Owen to me.

“Emi told me the baby isn’t mine.” Luca jolts at my words. “She said it’s Aldo’s.” His expression is blank, so I fill in the gaps for him. “Your soldier, Aldo.” I wave my hand in Luca’s direction. The look of pure shock marring his face should make me want to throw my head back and laugh in glee, if it wasn’t for the fact my girl had betrayed me.

“She wouldn’t do that,” the guy responds.

A pang of guilt cuts into my chest at the thought of the information I’m withholding regarding Lizzie, but I don’t have a death wish. Not when I want my wife back.

“I don’t care whose baby it is. I want my wife back and my fucking child!” I boom in their direction, and the room falls silent once again.

“You don’t care?” Luca’s lip curls at the corner menacingly.

I lift my chin. “No, Luca. I don’t fucking care. I love your sister, and I’m pretty damn sure she loves me too. If the baby isn’t biologically mine, then so be it. But I will be the best father and husband I can be. I just need to tell her that.”

Luca’s face transforms with pride, and his shoulders slacken as though a weight has been lifted. He gives me a sharp nod; a sense of unwavering approval pours from him.

The guy I’ve not seen until now steps forward, offering his hand. “I’m Enzo Varros. Luca’s right-hand man.” I shake his hand as his face gives way to a small smile, as though pleased to meet me.

“We need to find Aldo.” Maxim taps away frantically while Luca moves behind his desk to pick up his phone.

Damn right we need to find Aldo, and when we do, I’m taking back what’s mine.

I’ll happily let Luca Varros deal with that sly fucker. If he thinks he can steal my family right from under me, he has another thing coming.

Luca slumps into his chair. He holds his head in his hands and tugs at his hair as he unravels before us. “I can’t lose another sister.”

Sympathy builds inside me for the man I so easily hate.

“I have eyes on Aldo, he’s at Ravlek’s compound.” Maxim’s eyes cut to Luca’s, and he squeezes his eyes closed before snapping them open with a fierce determination.

My chest tightens at the knowledge of Emi and the baby in Ravlek’s presence. The guy looked like he wanted to eat her alive, and not in a good way. Nausea rolls through me.
