Not your problem, Bradley.I shift focus, trying to switch gears to my logical side. What to do with her car? I’ll have one of the officers drive the car to Rose’s house once I get Aurora booked. Okay. Good. What else?

Reaching deep into the passenger side floor well, I grab the last few items, lingering a few seconds longer than is polite on the tube of cherry lip gloss.

She greeted me with shiny pink lips that begged to be tasted.

Was she trying to get out of a ticket? Absolutely. Did that render her tactic a failure? Not entirely. If it weren’t for the bench warrant, she’d be headed down the road with a verbal warning.

It’s been nearly three months since Aurora Gray descended on Caribou Creek like a fucking hurricane. She’s been a massive pain in my ass since the first day she spilled coffee in my lap at the diner and tried to clean it up.

My cock still gets hard remembering that accidental touch.

Every time Aurora and I run into each other, disaster seems to follow. I’m lucky as hell that I don’t have third degree burns. The worst part is that I can’t seem to stay away. I’m drawn to her like a magnet, unable to resist the pull. To say I have a soft spot for the woman is the understatement of the decade.

“Find anything while you were digging through my purse?” Aurora accuses when I return to the patrol car.

“Just your tampons, Gray.”

“Oh, well, if that’s all.” Her flippant tone leaves my curiosity burning. I wasn’t snooping through her things, but now I wish I’d taken a peek at the contents that didn’t spill out of her purse. The light pink purse mocks me, setting my overactive imagination loose. Did she have a toy in there?

My cock twitches.

Down boy.

But the image of Aurora pleasuring herself has already started playing. I bet she’s fucking hot as hell getting herself off.

Aurora leans forward, her forehead pressed against the plexiglass. A wave of lavender rushes through the tiny holes, tempting me to pull the car over so I can get in the back with her.Get your head on straight. Not the time.“What exactly am I being arrested for?”

“You have a bench warrant.”

“A what?”

“It means you were supposed to appear in court and you didn’t show.”

“Court?” The genuine confusion in her tone hits me square in the chest. Aurora’s the first to admit she’s a bit of a walking disaster. When I ran her information, I didn’t expect the dispatcher to come back with a bench warrant. But I wasn’t entirely surprised. Flaking on a court date didn’t seem that out of character for Aurora Gray.

“You really don’t know what I’m talking about?”

“No.”

I pull into the alley behind the police station, feeling oddly protective of her. The last thing Aurora needs is the entire town gossiping about her arrest. She deserves to make her one phone call before the rumors reach her grandma. With any luck, she’ll be out on bond within the hour. “You should consult your lawyer.”

Opening the back door, I reach for her arm. I know she’s not going to run, which is why touching her is unnecessary and dangerous. Warmth erupts at the point of contact, shooting up my arm, spreading through my chest, and making a beeline below the belt.

“I don’t have a lawyer.” The earlier haughtiness is gone. If the tremble in her softening tone isn’t enough to do me in, the wide doe eyes shiny with unshed tears certainly is. It takes incredible restraint not to tug her into my arms and reassure her that everything will be fine. “Do I need one?”

“I’ll let you know.” It’s as much as I can promise without knowing more. Without compromising myself in the process.

I uncuff her, frowning at the faint red marks on one wrist. I tug up her sweater sleeve to get a better look. I left the damn things loose enough that she could have struggled out of them if she’d tried. “It’s not from the cuffs,” she says, yanking her hands away the second they’re free. She pulls down her sleeve and folds her arms, tucking her hands away from sight before I can get a good look at the marks.

“What are they from?” Rage rushes my body like a wildfire at the thought of someone hurting her.

“It’s nothing.”

“Aurora. Are you safe?”

Her eyelids close for several seconds, revealing a shimmering gold shadow I wouldn’t have liked on anyone else. When they reopen, the frightened and confused woman is gone. In her place is someone much stronger and unafraid. “Aren’t you supposed to be locking me up?”

“Inside, Gray.” One corner of my mouth lifts in amusement, pretending that I’ll let this concern drop. For now.
