“Okay, got it. What else?” Keys says as a ping comes across mine and River’s phones.

“Jinx and I are going to get the fucker to tell us where Phantom is hiding. Reaper is with us. I want Vixen, Rivet, Scarlett, and Ginger on standby in Fox. I expect he’ll call me and want to do a trade. I’ll need my bike, some chaps, and lots of weapons. You heard I want you there directing us all.”

“On it.” She hangs up, and I look at the two people standing with me.

“Sorry, Jinx, I’m on your bike and you’re riding bitch with one of us. We are heading toward Badger Road.”

“Get on, baby.” Reaper points at his Harley V-Rod with Ape hangers and an extra-long seat for a passenger. Jinx’s bike doesn’t have a bitch seat, so she’ll be more comfortable on his.

“You promise me you’ll keep her safe.” I hear her ask him, and he whispers something to her before she climbs on the back of his bike. She’s wearing a helmet he pulled out of his saddle bag for her. I grab hers and put it on.

We take off, and less than ten minutes later we are pulling down the side road alongside a small convenience store that’s been here since before I was born. We pass several houses before we come to a trailer sitting on a small plot of land. I park and pull my gun before I walk to the door and kick it in. I don’t give a flying fuck about neighbors calling the police or anything. I’ve got a one-track mind.

Get my daughter back.

The idiot screams like a girl from his computer setup, and I grab him. Reaper stomps in behind me and I swear the shitass almost pisses himself.

“I want to know where Phantom is hanging out. Where is he having you take the girls?”

“I can’t,” he whines. “He’ll kill me.” He shakes in my hand, and I press my gun under his chin. I stare him in the eyes.

“He just kidnapped my nine-year-old daughter. I’ll kill you if you don’t tell me. If you do, at least you’ll live.”

“You’ll take care of him?”

“Yes.” I have no doubt in my mind. I’m not afraid of the decisions I’ll make.

“Fine.”

He tells us. But just in case he tries to double-cross us, I drag him from the trailer with us.

“Reaper, Jinx, follow along.” I push him through the driver’s side into the passenger of his little Cobalt and then climb into the driver’s seat.

I’m about to take off when my cell rings. I look down and see an unknown number on the screen. I text Keys as I accept the call. I pull away and head toward Fox, where I can get my bike. The plan worked out better than I could’ve known. When this idiot told me where Phantom was hiding, I almost smiled, but I didn’t want to give anything away.

“Yeah.” I have my gun pressed against the idiot’s head to keep him quiet. This could be Thad checking up on me, but I’m fairly certain I know who it is.

“Hello, my beautiful little Scout.” Phantom’s voice comes across the line. I hear crying in the background and my spine straightens.

“She better be crying because she broke a nail, or I’ll shove my gun against your balls and shoot.”

“Now, now, my little girl. You know not to talk to Daddy that way.” He acts as if the years apart were of us missing each other and not what they really were. I hated the fact that he insisted I call him Daddy. I’m not opposed to that kink, but with him there was no way. He was sick and tortured me.

“You aren’t my daddy. You killed him.”

“See, you need a replacement.”

“Where are you?”

“Ask me nicely, little girl.” His voice holds a bite to it, and I want to choke on the vomit rising up my throat.

“Daddy, can I come see you?” I add an extra sugary sweetness to my voice. It’s hard to concentrate on driving and talking to him.

“Meet me at the Chatanika dredge. One hour. Alone, or she’ll no longer be crying. On your bike so you can’t hide anyone in that truck of yours. No cell. No communication. I have a signal blocker. Follow the surveyors tape.” That last part I knew because the idiot told us he procured it for Phantom.

“Yes, Daddy,” I say the words I know he wants to hear, but I hate that everyone is listening into our conversation and will know.

He hangs up and I do too before my cell is ringing again.
