I knew there was no going back then. She made me feel alive again, and I already knew this first night would not be our last.

Chapter Six

Leah

Wedidn’thavesex,I chanted in my head repeatedly the next day as I focused on working on the dead garden in the backyard of Tommy’s cottage. Yes, last night was incredibly hot and sensual. Tommy had kissed every inch of my skin and his fingers had worked their way through my wetness.

Even now I could feel his breath on my skin, and I missed feeling the warmth of his body as he pressed into me. He has kissed me, worshipped me,made loveto me with his lips and hands, but he hadn’t pleasured himself.

That meant we didn’t have sex.If only it worked that way.The mere fact that I was sexualizing my best friend’s dad made this insanely outrageous. I couldn’t even stand the guy … so why was I thinking about him this way?

The garden was a mess. There were dried-up leaves and flowers everywhere. I tried digging and wetting the ground so I could give way to the free soil for planting. The one thing I learned from my mother when she was alive was how to plant flowers, and I couldn’t wait to transform this entire place.

I had managed to clear half of the garden, but I was tired, and my shoulders had started to hurt. When I picked up the hoe again and bent over to continue work, I heard a deep, gruff voice behind me.

“What in God’s name are you doing?” Tommy questioned in a deep voice that shocked me to the core. I spun around with speed and missed my balance. The next second, my butt landed on the ground, and I yelped.

The pain reverberated and zapped from my spine upward, once it reached my brain. I whimpered again and tears stung my eyes. “You scared the hell out of me,” I managed to say before I felt a tear slip.

“You’ll hurt yourself,” he replied, then closed the distance between us, and lifted me off the ground into his arms. The move shocked me, and I wrapped my hands around his neck immediately to keep myself steady in his arms.

“What are you doing?” My heartbeat fast from a combination of fear and excitement. Being this close to Tommy let me see his blue eyes close up, and the racing excitement toppled. His musky scent filled and tantalized my nostrils, images of the previous night flashed through my head and made his touch burn inside me.

“Put me down,” I challenged when we got into the house.

When Tommy made no move to obey, I tried to free myself from his grip. “Put me down, dammit.”

“You’re so stubborn!” he yelled back, then kicked the front door shut with his legs and dropped me on my feet. My head swooned, but he steadied me. “Are you always this disagreeable? You fell down and probably hurt your back. I was trying to be nice. Besides, it’ll hurt more if you walk.”

“You’re not nice. You scared me and made me fall, how does that make you nice?

I spun around to walk away, but the first step made me flinch. “Ouch,” I cried out, then touched my lower back.

“It hurts right?” Tommy asked behind me, so I glanced over my shoulder at him again and hoped my gaze shot daggers at him. “I hate to be a jerk, but I told you so.”

“You’re annoying,” I huffed as he picked me off the ground again, carried me to a couch then gently set me down on it.

“Sit here and don’t move,” he commanded.

My cheeks heated up, and I blamed it on the flush of anger rising through me instead of the fact that being close to him reminded me of last night in his bed. I snuck out early this morning and tried to keep my mind busy by gardening but that didn’t work.

I thought of Tommy, and I wanted more of his touch.Craved it like it was oxygen.

Oh boy,I thought, as I squeezed my eyes closed for a moment. What do I do with these feelings stirring alive inside me?

He returned with a. first aid box, opened it, and handed me an ointment. “It’s a deep relieving cream,” he said. “It’ll help.”

I stared at the tube, then at him.

“Do you need me to rub it on you?” he questioned before he snatched it.

“No thank you; I’ll manage.”

Tommy scoffed, then he rose to his feet and walked away from me again. When he returned, he handed me a glass of water and an aspirin tablet. “For the pain,” he said.

“Thank you.” My heart fluttered wildly and sipping from the glass didn’t help to calm it. He was staring at me now with intense eyes, and the tingles surrounding my nerves increased. I needed to stop my pulse from skittering, so I cleared my throat and rose to my feet, ignoring the pain in my lower back.

“Careful,” he reacted when I took the first step and moved past him. “You should rest it out.”
