Two cops got out of the car, and I instinctively put Leah behind me.

“Leah Maureen?” the first cop asked when he got to where we stood. “You’re under arrest for a hit-and-run, and for evading the law. You have the right to remain silent, and ...”

They read her Miranda rights while I tried to stop them from taking her, but nothing I did worked, and the detectives were already cuffing her hands.

“I’m coming right behind you, Leah,” I said in a rush as they led her away. I asked them where they were taking her.

She didn’t look back at me, and neither did she slow down. I watched them shove her into the car, then drive off.

Cherry rushed to me just while I was trying to get my bearing, and she asked in a panicked tone. “What is going on? is she all right?”

Other customers had risen to their feet and were also watching me now. I didn’t know what to say to them. I couldn’t even get my pulse to stop racing at that moment.

The cops’ sirens were still blowing off in the distance, and I couldn’t answer Cherry yet because my brain was spinning, and my heart felt like a hand had a tight grip on it in my chest. I had to get to Leah …. I had to stay on top of this situation.

“She’ll be fine,” I said to Cherry and moved to walk away but she stopped me by placing a hand on my arm. “I meant it, Cherry. I’m going to bring her back, don’t worry.”

She nodded, then I hurried to my car, got in, and drove off while dialing Peter’s number so he could meet me at the station.

Chapter Twenty-Two

Leah

“Ifeelsick,”Icomplained when Danielle and Tommy walked over to the cell and announced to me that the cops were not granting me bail.

“What are you talking about? Wait … Is this some strategy to get out of here? Because if it is then it’s working and I’m so on board,” Danielle said in a rush.

“No, Danielle, this is not a hoax … I’m sick … I feel sick and it’s like I’m gonna puke.”

I retched before even completing the sentence but closed my eyes and drew in a deep breath. I had to stay strong. This was bound to happen soon and now that it had, I had to pay for my crimes.

It’s not your fault, Leah. This was all Trevor’s doing.

“The judge has to know right? He has to know that I didn’t do anything. I mean the detectives can find out that it wasn’t me behind the wheel that night, and that I’m innocent right?”

Danielle nodded. “But you ran away and then you evaded the court order summoning you.”

“You’re looking at a sentence here, Miss Maureen,” some other man interrupted before Danielle could say more, and I looked up to see Tommy standing by his side.

“Who are you?” Danny and I chorused just before Tommy stepped forward.

“This is Peter, he’s my lawyer and a dear friend. He’s going to handle your court hearing and everything else. I want to make sure you’re in safe hands, and I can’t think of a better lawyer than Peter.”

“Thank you,” Peter interrupted. “Well, I don’t think I can get you bail judging by the fact that it’s a hit-and-run case that happened over six months ago, and you ran from Nashville after you got the court order. You didn’t show up for any of the arraignments, and now the judge has reason to believe you were guilty because of the medical report and the testimony from the other witness.”

“I’m gonna be sick,” I complained again because the rocking wave of nausea that hit my stomach made me shudder inside. “I’m gonna spend the rest of my life in jail, aren’t I? I’m gonna die while wearing an orange jumpsuit that doesn’t even look good on me.”

“Relax,” Danielle said to console me. “Orange is not that bad on you … I’ve seen you in beige, and that’s the worst. It makes you look like an old woman that just lost her husband.”

“Danielle,” I cried out, shocked that she was teasing me at a time like this.

“Okay let’s try to relax. I can probably work out a deal with the judge but for tonight, I know you’re sleeping right here in that cell, honey.”

When Peter walked away from us for a minute, I managed to sit on the bench, then dropped my head into my hands and closed my eyes. “What do I do?” I muttered to myself.

This isn’t the way I planned to spend the night after telling Tommy I loved him and hearing him say it out. The air around me smelled like rotten eggs, and I knew it had to be in my head because I couldn’t see anything disgusting in sight.

Danielle returned and sighed. “It’s all right, Leah. I’m gonna stay here the entire night with you,” she said.
