Delgado came into the courtroom, and relief flooded me now because I knew he would say the truth. He was in the car that night, he saw the accident, and he knew Leah was not the one driving that night.

Trevor’s screwed.

All I had to do was sit back and watch it all happen. When the judge pulled Leah, Peter, Trevor, and his lawyer into her office, I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to know what would happen in there.

The courtroom was practically empty anyway, and I noticed Danielle was clinging to her purse so hard, so I reached out and covered her hand with mine.

“She’s gonna be all right,” I told Danielle. “Leah’s going to be fine.”

She stopped shivering as I touched her, and she finally raised her gaze to me. “I’m sorry Dad about what I said in the car. I’m just scared that now that you’ve got Leah, I’m gonna be all alone. Leah’s great Dad and I want her to be happy like you do.”

“You’re not alone,” I said to her. “You’re never going to be alone, Danielle.”

“Promise?”

She sounded just like my little girl when she said promise, and I leaned close to her, then pulled her into a side hug. When the door opened and Leah came out with Peter, we both jerked to our feet and rushed forward to meet her.

A second later, Trevor came out with cuffs on his wrists, and he eyed all of us with a reddened face as the cop shoved him to keep moving, then I turned to Leah and saw that her color was still pale.

“Are you all right, Leah?” Danny asked as she moved to Leah’s side and touched her hand. “You’re pale.”

“I got a fine,” she said in a hushed tone. “I got a huge fine to pay but I’m not going to jail. I’m not ...” I knew she was going to panic, so I reached out to her and caught her in my arms just before she passed out.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Leah

Myheadkeptspinningeven hours after I woke up in a hospital bed. It had to be a relief from finding out I didn’t need to spend a few years in jail. Peter had found a way to bring Delgado here, and he made him spill the truth.

I drove that night, but Trevor took over from me and was the one driving at the time of the accident. I hit my head pretty badly and passed out so I couldn’t remember a thing. Also, the drugs in my system made it difficult for me to recall the events of the night.

Trevor then paid Thomas Delgado a chunk sum of money to lie about the incident. The attempted hit-and-run when I was with Tommy that night was all Delgado’s doing. He had confessed to that too in the judge’s office.

“How are you feeling?” Danielle asked when she noticed I was awake again. She stood up from the couch she sat on and walked over to my side. “You fainted. The doctor says it’s stress, but they are trying to run some tests.”

“What time is it?” I queried in a shaky voice.

He’s such a jerk.

“It’s past six,” Danielle answered. “Six o’clock of the same day, so don’t panic, okay?”

Danielle came to sit on the edge of the bed, and she touched my hand gently before sighing. “I’m sorry about what I said to you the other day,” she said to me in a small voice. “I’m sorry that I yelled and made you think I don’t want you to be happy. I just don’t want to be alone. With you and my dad falling in love with one another, that leaves me by myself.”

“That’s crazy Danielle,” I interrupted. “I could never stop loving you. You’re my best friend and you’re family. I want it to stay that way regardless of anything.”

“I want it to stay that way too,” she agreed with a small smile, then came closer to me for a hug. We stayed in that embrace for a long time before a soft knock came on the door and interrupted us.

“Hi,” the doctor walked into the room and greeted us as she took off the stethoscope on her neck and came closer to the bed. “Your test results came back, and thankfully there’s nothing much wrong with you.”

“Nothing much?” Danielle croaked, and her tone of voice made me panic.

“Am I dying?”

“Of course not. You’re a healthy young woman and the baby is too,” she announced while wearing a wide smile.

“The baby?” I turned to Danielle, and Danielle gave me a shocked look before we both looked at the doctor and chorused. “I don’t understand, what baby?”

Our voices sounded alike, and Danielle was just as shocked as I was.
