“Maggie!”

Within seconds a raging creature grabs her by the shoulders, tugging her away. His eyes are wild, with crimson blood clouding them like the sky. His hold on the human tightens as he hisses at me, pulling away his meal like a starved wolf.

My panic for the woman explodes from my pores in a wave of bright light, beaming as it reaches toward the maddened male. He staggers before succumbing to my spell, my powers stripping away his darkness with each fraction of a second.

Blackness seeps from his mouth like the ectoplasm portrayed in horror tales around the globe. It climbs free of his mouth and drifts toward me, ready to be consumed and disposed of.

“Stop!”

Her cry silences everything like a blow horn. My gaze drops from the darkness to the human collapsed by the maddened one's side. Her face is tear-stained. Devastated.

“Stop,” she says again, this time in a whimper.

The warmth of power inside me dissipates, forced away by the pain displayed on her features. Her hands are busily rubbing over the unconscious male's arms, both soothing and frantic in their movements. “Please,” she whispers, bending over to kiss the male's pale cheek.

I place my hand over the ache in my heart.

What is this?

Swallowing a lump as it forms in my throat, I kneel beside the fallen pair. “He wasn’t trying to hurt you?”

I saw him grab her. He wanted to tear into her; to eat her flesh and drink her life force. This male was crazed.

Or…

Or maybe I’ve made a mistake.

“No.” The woman rubs her hand over the male's chest. Her gaze is cast downward, avoiding my direction. “He’s my partner,” she finishes.

Partner.

Partner.

I’ve nearly destroyed her heart.

The woman gulps down another sob, smearing the back of one hand over her tear soaked cheek. “Please don’t hurt him. He’s the only person I have left.”

I’m already backing away, clenching my chest like it’s my soul that's shattering instead of hers. How selfish must I be? How naïve?How oblivious?

There are more pieces of the puzzle here. The monsters aren’t always monsters. They never have been. Ren never has been, this male never has been. I’ve been coasting. Sucking darkness without asking the hard questions. Starting a job without completing my entry level training courses.

What a fuckingmessI have made.

“I’m so sorry, child. Please forgive me.”

And then I turn, rushing into the foliage and toward safety. I can’t let myself purge these emotions with this girl as a witness. I need the warmth of the fire and berries as comfort.

I need Ren.

Ren

Wherethefuckhasshe gone?

When I returned from my self-proclaimed cemetery after placing the new corpse beside the others, Thea had all but vanished. Her breakfast was left untouched, and the fire had burned down to embers.

At first, I assumed she had caught sight of some sort of fauna and went to prance around the forest after it. Then I circled the entire campsite and found nothing but worms, so my hypothesis changed. Perhaps she followed a fluttering insect into the depths of the woods?
