I’ve witnessed nothing like it, but that’s no surprise. She herself is a miracle; a mystery. Iamcurious about her inner workings. I want to know how she feels when she’s lit up with power, or how someone so soft could be so menacing.

Every bit of her calls to me. Her eyes, the long white hair falling over her shoulders and pooling atop the stone, the wrinkles her belly makes as she sits, the way her skin shimmers beneath the light like stardust…

My heart pinches with an invisible stab, as if to remind me she’smine.

“So, now what?” She lifts her arms, crossing them beneath her breasts. The position causes her mounds to press together provocatively.

I groan inwardly, ignoring the ache radiating from my groin as I try to remember how to speak.

“What were you doing in this pool?” My hand twitches with the need to touch her, but I reel it back in. Tilting my head further down, I still, wishing I could get closer without fearing for my life. She’s dangerous,I remind myself.

But the danger only adds to her beauty.

She moves her head to the side, revealing her slender neck as she glances at the small waterfall. Her shoulders rise and fall. “Bathing. Human bodies get rather smelly after a while.” Her wide eyes dart back to mine, brightening. “Did you know humans sweat? Like, alot.”

My heart pulses, tightening my throat. “So you’re human, then?”

She screws her face, twisting a lock of her drying hair with one finger. Her posture is completely at ease, as if she knows I’m no one to fear. “Not exactly. I’m…” She trails off, glancing down at her bare lap. “A goddess inside a living vessel, I guess? Something like that.” She shrugs again. “Humans don’t have the best understanding of people like me, so they’ve given my kind many names. Goddess, angel, light bringer. They’re one in the same.”

“In my world, we had legends-true accounts- of Novian leaders who birthed our darkness. You’re like them, only…” I wave my fingers through the air. “Of light.”

My mate nods eagerly. “Sure. Light. That’s the essence of our being.”

Her pure delight forces my lips to curve upward. “And yet you sweat? How does it feel?”

The question is a mistake.

In an instant, I’m brought back to the darkness, feeling and sensing the agonizing scene as it unfolds. Flashes of memories push through the gate I barricaded them behind. Memories of screaming bodies slick with blood and fear-induced perspiration.

I grit my teeth, barring them from my mind as quickly as they came. My past willnotsour this moment.

My mate's arm juts out, bobbing inches from my chest. “Here,” she says. “Feel for yourself.”

The invisible struggle inside of me ends then, replaced with wonder. The female,my mate, who seemed so viscous in her treatment of my kind, is now offering me the most valued gift. She wants me to touch her, to feel what she feels.

Instead of cold or reserved, she appears light and carefree. She’s stunning in this way, unaffected by the plights of the world.

I reach out, probing her with my gaze in case she changes her mind. In response, she only lifts her arm further towards me.

My fingertips press over her wrist, feeling the rush of her blood as it courses through her cool flesh. Her shimmering skin is airy, even softer than humans.

I take a step towards her as I trail my hand over her lower arm, rubbing along her damp skin. My ears perk as I hear her small gasp.

My mate is receptive to this. She’s open to the bond already forming between us, and its effects are making itself known. As a Queen, does she acknowledge this sacred pairing? Will she give herself to me?

Her bright eyes turn lidded as my touch continues to rise, curving over her elbow.

“Your hands are warm,” she murmurs.

“My kind are from a land with two suns. Our temperature runs warmer than the native inhabitants of this land.”

As if my words have broken a spell, Thea straightens. Her arm falls back to her side as she leans back on her hands, letting her head fall to the left side of her shoulder. “About that. Why are you immune to the blights of your fellow species?”

My mouth dries at her question. How can I explain the troubles I’ve been through since coming into this world? Would she understand my wrongdoings and accept my redemption?

It’s too early to tell.

Overhead the clouds roll in, moving over the break in the trees and darkening our surroundings. A bird tweets in its nest somewhere in the brush behind us. This setting isn’t the place for me to unload my guilt to the female in front of me. She deserves better.
