I sit on the damp ground, guards standing by with spears should I choose to get rowdy. I want to, but there is no point. I cannot physically escape without some kind of equipment or aid.

“There he is, the master of the dance.”

Lord Egretz entered the cell area looking more like a hooded assassin himself. His clown-like lips protruding out of the shadows were an identifiable marker.

I roll my eyes, and lean on my palms, discouraged completely.

“What do you want from me, Egretz?” I huff. “I’m sorry you’re not as charming as you think you are and couldn’t land the hottest babe on the market.”

I see him move closer to the cell, nearly pushing his head against the iron. I’m sitting on the floor at the back of the enclosure, but I could easily leap forward, grab hold of him by the scruff of his neck and dig in deep with my fangs.

But killing Egretz would only enhance the turmoil of my predicament.

He chuckled in the dark, his fat, smug lips hovering in the air like an apparition.

“It looks like you and I have a lot more in common than you think, hmm?” Egretz scolds.

I lift my eyes to him, still leaning on my palms, utterly disinterested in the confluence of events taking place.

“What makes you say that?”

Egretz paces up and down the length of the cell, a superior air about his floaty movements that irk me to no end.

“It looks to me like you have two choices, but the ending is the same. You will not have your woman. You have not landed the hottest commodity in the realm.”

I snap at him, my rage getting the best of me. “And explain to me how exactly that is going to work?” I sneer.

Egretz sighs with satisfaction and sinister glee.

“You can help me land Lana, the heiress, the woman with the coin, persuade her to be my mate, and no harm will come to either of you.”

I do my best to contain my laughter, but it puffs out like a train losing steam. I cover my face with my hands and hold my stomach with the other while Egretz remains still and serious.

“You’ve got to be fucking joking,” I say, still chuckling like a madman.

“Your second option is this,” Egretz continues, starting to pace once more. “Since you have refused to help me gain Lana’s favor, I will use my status to inform her all about what you did. It must have been quite a sight to see that pesky demon on top of such a prize-looking woman?”

My body has a mind of its own, and the image of Lana has spurred it forward.

I leap up and bash against the bars while Egretz has enough time to take a small step away. I shake the bars, jaw clenched, while using the other set of hands to reach out desperately to grasp the son of a bitch.

“You don’t know anything,” I hiss at him. “I killed that demon. There is nothing else left to say about it.”

“Oh, on the contrary, dear Sys,” Egretz continues, smiling with conniving intentions. “You know as well as I do that there is way more to the story.”

I continue to shake the bars, regret surging through me. If I could change what I did, I would do it in a heartbeat. Harm coming to Lana is worse than anything wretched happening to me. None of that status bullshit means anything to me anymore.

I grit my teeth, swiping at the air to reach for anything, a scrape of his cape to yank his body toward me. The guards hold their spears out at me, but Egretz raises a single calm hand into the air.

“Don’t be stupid, Sys. You made a deal with that dirty demon to have Lana killed, so you could take her spot, get the coin, and become the heir.”

The words are like acid on my skin, and I find myself groaning, getting weary with grief. I settle down with the bars but rattle them one more time before pinning my head against the cool metal.

“It’s different now,” I mutter. “I feel differently.”

Egretz laughs, his hot breath blasting into my face.

“None of that matters, dear Sys. All she needs to know is that you wanted to have her killed. And now you are wooing her. Who is going to trust a demon like that?”
