And that is where I am now, unable to cape myself in the darkness of rest. I lay in a bed too large for one person … the space next to me is cold and taunting.

I was wallowing in my own despair, but I didn’t care. Nothing seems worthwhile anymore, especially the concept of a higher status, even wealth. It is nothing that could cure me from the wound of my sins committed upon the most dazzlingly perfect woman I have ever met in my demonic life.

Or likely will ever again.

The thought makes me grunt a guttural, agonizing tone and pull the covers over my head. It must have been a few hours since I left the tower, but within this darkness, it may as well be days.

I try to force myself into sleep. Anything to escape the ridicule cascading through my mind. Just when I think I am on the edge of oblivion, the doorbell shrieks.

My eyes flash open, the ceiling an indifferent sight.

“Fuck,” I glower to myself.

I try to ignore it, hoping whoever it is will take the hint and go away, but it rings again two more times, its shrill call enough to make my skull burst. I sit up reluctantly, rip the covers off my body, and stomp to the front door.

I am ready to tear the demon’s head off when I realize it is my friend Durr. He is staring at me, having few of the traits I do since he is a berserker demon with red skin, a more immense size, and with a clueless expression.

“Where the fuck have you been?” Durr bellows.

I squint, the depth of his tone making my brain rattle. I feel a bit like I had been drinking heavily the night before and now suffer from a hangover. But this is a lovesick hangover instead.

“What do you want?” I snap at him.

He frowns, never the one to take a hint.

“I asked you a question first.”

“I’m here. In my home. Where else would I be?”

He brings a hand to his chin and strokes his dark beard. He looks at me like I just asked him the most obvious question in eternity.

“Well, you’ve been with Lana,” he says, still scowling and bewildered. “Who was in the tower over there ….”

He points, and my eyes roll back so intensely that I feel like they may get stuck there.

“I don’t have the time for your antics, Durr,” I say rudely. “Tell me why you’re here quickly. I’ve had a hot pile of ur’gin shit of a day, and I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Because of Lana?”

I sigh, then hold the door open for him. He saunters in, gazing around the hut like it was the first time he’d ever seen it.

“Spit it out, Durr.”

“Well, I was watching out for her like you paid me to do,” Durr begins, “and I saw her leave. I thought it was strange she was without you.”

My heart seizes in my chest.

“Go on,” I say, trying to sound patient.

“Well, you know me, I get curious. So I followed her, wondering where you were, and I saw her go back to that Lord Egretz demon. You know, the one who kidnapped you?”

I slide my jaw side to side impatiently.

“Yes? And?”

Durr lifts his hand to stroke his chin again, then releases information like he was giving directions to the nearest train station.

“She went inside. It seems like it was her choice.”
