She chuckled softly against me as I moved under the flickering torches. She doesn’t recoil from my suggestive quip, which convinces me more and more of her matching affection.

Yet, I am the most terrified I have been in my existence. And I fight multi-limbed demons in court on a daily basis.

“It usually only comes out when I’m highly stressed,” Lana continued as we reached the top of the tower. “That’s the first time I’ve actually summoned it intentionally. It was certainly an unforgettable experience.”

I nod, my adoration for this woman blooming by the second. We get to her bedroom, and I push the door open with my lower arms, carrying her to the bed in a familiar act of compassion.

I remember the demon assassin, and my stomach stings with acid. I place her down softly, noticing a golf-ball-sized bulge has emerged on the wrist without a coin.

It makes me angry, but I know that that anger comes from love. I touch it gently, and she winces.

“He hurt you?” I grunt.

Lana nods, her head sinking into the pillow but smiles at me with a flirty glimmer.

“Twisted it to pin me to the table,” she says. “I honestly forgot about it.”

I shake my head, then help Lana remove her cape. I assess the rest of her body for injuries, including the palm that will forever hold the coin.

“Systorak,” she says, breathy and sensual.

“Yes, darling?”

“Can the coin ever actually be removed?”

I’m sitting at her bedside, having retrieved ice from the kitchen area to hold against her swollen wrist. She doesn’t insist that she can hold it. She lets me take care of her. I look at her other hand laying on the bed covers, the furl of the dead skin around the object horrific looking.

“No, it can’t,” I say bluntly. “Not without taking off your entire hand. Even then, it would be difficult to pry it out. The properties associated with it are very powerful and dark magic.”

She gazes at it, opening and closing her fingers. Lana then turns back to me without smiling, that flare of red in her eyes returning with her fragile proclamation.

“Tell me why you really came back,” she says. “I want to hear the truth.”

While still pressing the ice to Lana’s wrist, I lower my head and kiss the exposed portion that isn’t injured. I watch as a blanket of goosebumps blossoms over her skin, and I trail my lips delicately as I speak.

“I have never said this to anyone in my entire life, Lana,” I begin, the words firing out like a machine gun. “But once you found out about my betrayal and you banished me, I knew it was all true.”

I sensed Lana’s heart palpitating, her lovely chest rising and falling as she watched me intently. I brought a hand to her cheek to ease her anxiety, and she closed her eyes.

“Lana, I am in love with you. I think I was the moment we met, but I couldn’t face it. You are the most magnificent woman I have ever seen. Your assertiveness, your tenacity, your intelligence, strength, beauty, I can go on …”

She laughs, the red in her eyes shining like the sun.

“The idea of a demon falling for a human is incredibly absurd, and I let that get in the way. It gave me permission to let you go. But it would be the biggest mistake of my life to not tell you that at the very depths of my heart and soul, you are my mate. The love of my life, in other words.”

Lana’s eyes glass over, and her lips tremble. My heart is prepared to cave in at the possibility of rejection but also bursting with the thrill of pure honesty.

“Oh, Sys,” she whispers, kissing my palm with warm lips. “That was all I needed you to say. You’re right, it is absurd, and I tried to let the news of your betrayal take you away from me. But now I know nothing can.”

I breathe a sigh of relief, the loudest and most crucial one I’ve ever expressed, and place her wrist on the bed, resting on the ice. I hold her face in my hands and scoot closer to her on the bed.

“Tell me,” I whisper joyfully.

“Trolvor demon, I am in love with you. I want to stay here, with you, with this fucking coin in my hand, and run this realm the way we see fit.”

I am elated. We both laugh, and with jovial tears streaming down our faces, we press our lips together. She tastes like fresh morning dew, and she moans as her body slides onto the flat of the bed. I make sure none of my weight comes to her wrist, which I push aside as she arches her back, our mouths opening at the same time to begin our passionate dance.

I use my lower hands to pull her legs around my waist, settling between them, being careful with her neck and every other part of her that had been drained from the use of her ancient sorcery powers. Lana, though, lost in her fervor of love, brings both hands to the back of my head, brushing the tips of her fingers up and onto my horns with an erotic intention.
