“Bought him?”

I look ahead, avoiding eye contact. “It’s best if we don’t go too deeply into it.”

I feel her shut down next to me, blocking off emotions. Good. I don’t need any more conflicting feelings in the way of my getting home.

I think of how human-demon relationships are unheard of, even forbidden, in court. I breathe deeply and set my mind on returning to my realm, blocking out the thoughts of her staring into my eyes last night.

I can’t help it. Her body is immaculate. Her moans enthrall and capture me, and the confidence she has in the bedroom is astounding. The way she touches me sends a feeling through my core that I have never felt.

“There he is,” she said, pulling me behind a tree trunk.

We watch as Malaki packs his artifacts into his wagon, struggling to lift some of his chests. Another man approaches, helping him organize the trinkets, and I watch as he packs boxes lined with runes into his cart.

I realize he is carrying black market wares. Runes are a sacred tool of the dark elves and demons, not to be taken lightly. I wonder if he informs the humans of their power and strength.

“How do we get him to talk?” I whisper.

“We threaten him,” she responds.

I stare at her, shocked. I didn’t expect her to have this dark side, this hunger for manipulation. I feel more attracted to this woman every time I learn something new about her.

“With what?”

She looks at me as if I should know the answer. She motions to me. “You, idiot.”

I find a giddy feeling arise in my chest. I haven’t threatened anyone in a while and miss the rush from the sense of control and power.

“All right,” I agree as we watch Malaki say goodbye to the man.

We slipped around the trunk and walked toward his wagon. He is petting his equus and putting reins on them. We crept behind the cart and watched him walk around to take his seat. Jenna popped out before I was ready, and I closed my eyes and sighed at her lack of planning.

“Malaki,” she yelled. He spun around and smiled.

“Ah, the girl who bartered her necklace. What can I do for you?”

When he spotted Verrin, he hopped on his cart and took off.

JENNA

Malaki speeds off before Verrin, and I can catch up. I throw my arms up in aggravation and turn to Verrin, who stares at me with his hands on his hips.

“Why would you rush him like that?” he asked, irritated.

“What do you mean?”

“There could have been better planning, a better execution.”

“Whatever,” I say, waving a hand at him.

What’s wrong with him? We had an incredible night last night; now he’s being standoffish and rude. I find myself getting irritated as well as I watch Malaki ride off.

“We need a cart,” I say, avoiding eye contact with Verrin. I hear him sigh and look up as he turns to face a nearby village.

“Can we get one from there?” he asked, pointing to the stables on the outskirts.

“Luckily, I know the owner because I damn sure can’t afford one,” I huff, walking past him toward the stable.
