“Sire, I’m bored,” he expresses, flopping down on the table next to me.

“If you just wait, Yeelus,” I mutter irritably, waving a hand toward the inevitable showdown.

“But, sire, I …”

“Shh, be quiet,” I command, smirking.

I wonder what is said between the two fools. Initially, I had told Angramir’s right-hand man of this fabricated plot and prayed he would recite the warning precisely as I told him.

Angramir pushes Daranez, and I chuckle loudly.

“Sire, we’ve been through this game,” Yeelus complains, resting his head on his paws.

“Yes.” I point at the fight once more. “But not like this.”

Yeelus rolled his eyes, but I paid no mind. I watch Angramir step into the center of the ball and open my mouth in shock. This is not the show I was expecting. It’s better.

“Daranez, I challenge you to a duel,” he declared, gripping his claws into his palm.

The women of the court gasped, frightened. Fear ripples through the ballroom as other men try to de-escalate the fight. Angramir pushed them away and turned to address the room. He throws a claw out, pointing to Daranez cowering in the corner.

“This demon has plotted to kill my mate,” he declares loudly.

Mate? Even better!I think.

“Sire,” Yeelus sighs.

“Shh.” I waved my hand at him again.

“He must be challenged to protect my honor,” Angramir pleads, looking at the men of the court.

The court demons exchanged glances and nodded, allowing the duel to take place. I leaned forward in my chair, eyes locked on the fury of Angramir.

Daranez stepped out from the shadows, carrying his skeletal figure with a hint of pre-battle defeat. Angramir towers over him, his muscles tensing and breath quickening.

A court senator approaches to monitor the fight. I smiled widely. A duel hasn’t happened at a ball in quite some years. This may be the best plan I’ve had.

“Duel,” the senator announces.

Angramir claws at Daranez, but he dodges quickly. Daranez runs around Angramir, giving him no time to turn, and jumps on his back, strangling him. Angramir throws him over his head, and the court grimaces as he slaps onto the floor.

Rolling over in agony, Daranez looks at Angramir with pleading eyes.

Angramir chuckles. “This is too easy.”

As Angramir is about to step on his throat, Daranez kicks and knocks him off balance. Angramir falls to the floor, and Daranez stands, kneeling on Angramir with a claw to his throat.

“If I was going to kill your loved ones,” Daranez mocks with a smile, “I wouldn’t need your brute force. Speed and strategy are best for catching a victim off guard.”

Angramir snarled and grabbed him by the shoulders, hurling him across the room. Daranez lands at my feet and meets my gaze.

“Go on,” I say, shooing him back to the battle.

He looks at me suspiciously as if he has figured out the plan. I watch Angramir stomp toward me and smile. It’s too late for any vengeance toward me now, and even if they did confront me, I “heard it from someone else.”

Angramir picked Daranez up by his throat, and he struggled, grasping Angramir’s giant arms.

“I will spare you this time,” Angramir declares.
