I wish I had said goodbye to them. I wish we had not ended things in a fight. But there is no time for that.

I wonder where Varzig is. Is he safe? Is he happy?

And then everything changed in a second.

The dark elf was walking in front of me, leading me to the outskirts of Camp Shadows, when he staggered backward.

He howls with pain and rage before he collapses completely.

I’m still carrying the book, and I hold it up in front of my chest like a shield. But when I look up, I realize that I do not need a shield.

Varzig stands in front of me, holding a sword.

I stumbled toward him, and he took me in his arms without a word. Then he pushed me behind him and ran toward the elf.

Turning away from them, I close my eyes, wincing at the sound of the blade ripping into flesh.

The dark elf’s screams die away with him.

“There are naga and orcs coming for the village right now,” I tell Varzig urgently. There is no time for niceties.

My demon looks down at me and nods curtly.

“They must be here for the Tome of Ledantis. And we need to get out of here quickly.”

And before I can say a word, he has gathered me into his arms and is flexing his wings. With several strong flaps, he vaults himself into the air.

And we are airborne.

I look down from the great height we have reached, and I can see the entire desert. The naga are coming into the village through the entryway on the East.

The orc chieftain and his army are coming in from the West.

And just to the north are the dark elves. They have not yet discovered the death of their sorcerer.

The dark elves are dressed in their best finery. Their clothing shines in the evening light.

They are beautiful,I think as I examine them from far away. They are tall and lean. Their muscles ripple beneath gleaming, dark skin.

The dark elves’ long hair is braided in intricate twists and designs.

And everyone is ready for war.

I know now that this is all because of the book, the Tome of Ledantis.

I know what I’m going to do when Varzig sets us down somewhere.

* * *

We area few hundred paces away from Camp Shadows. I can still see the Camp from where we stand, huddled beneath a copse of trees.

We are on the ground, but Varzig still has his arm around my waist. My face is pressed into his chest.

I can pull away. He’s not holding onto me too tightly. But for a second, I simply want to remain in his embrace.

My body has gone cold, and my skin prickles where the evening air touches it. It’s not even that cold outside, but I’m shivering.

Knowing what I’m going to do next has made my throat grow closed. I can barely speak when I finally pull away from Varzig.
