“I have obtained the sacred artifact, my lord,” he says solemnly. “It has been achieved through the combined efforts of yours truly, and my mate: Tessa Williams.”

My heart began to race. I didn’t expect to be introduced quite so soon.

The King walked over slowly, looking like a phantom, his feet hidden by the long cape. His eyes fixate on the book, then me, and then the book again. His pink tongue slithered from his lips, and then he grabbed the book on both sides.

“I see you’ve done more than achieve your mission, my Varzig,” he said, eyes flicking toward me briefly. “You have found yourself this lovely young human.”

He bites down on human, and Varzig holds on tightly to the book. They locked eyes, and I started to plan a way to conceal myself from a demonic fistfight.

“She’s my mate, dear King,” Varzig said. “Unfortunately, I have been bound to the book. It was a necessary sacrifice in order to remove it from Protheka.”

“Then she must know her place,” the King sneered.

I go to my knees as the King snorts, and Varzig uses his hand to touch my lower back. It’s annoying, but it’s a necessary evil.

He pulled the book from Varzig’s loose fingers, having lost interest in me completely.

“Now, as far as this book goes, I hope you haven’t underestimated your King’s power as a sorcerer.”

Without saying another word, the King ran a single finger over the spine of the book, and the pages began to flap. All of the tales that I had written, about the knight and the orcs, about the demon, about my own death, and finally, the single story Varzig had written, flowed away from the pages. The King closed his eyes as the ink flowed through his fingers, an orange spark severing the binding between Varzig and the artifact.

The pages of the book suddenly stop fluttering, and the King is elated. He snapped it shut and shoved it under his arm before turning to walk away.

“You have done well, good Varzig,” he said proudly. “How would you feel about becoming a permanent member of the King’s guard?”

I see Varzig shake visibly. Clearly, it’s a noble position, and he accepts it without second guessing.

He rises to his feet and brings a hand to his chest, and I follow suit, rising up without fear.

“It would be an honor to serve as the King’s guard,” he said proudly. “I happily accept your offer, dear King.”

The King sat on his throne, stroking the book in his lap like a cat.

“You will not regret it, dear Varzig. Now go. Your residence will be close to the palace now. Share it and thrive with your gorgeous mate.”

I feel a little shudder but manage to stifle it for the moment. I bow my head, following Varzig’s behavior, and we are led back out by the King’s guard.

Once we got back outside in the scorching heat, I turned to him, that childlike smile returning to his handsome face.

“So I’m guessing that is all good?”

Varzig lifts me up into his arms, cackling like a maniac. This continues on as he carries me back to what will be our home, a decadent palace meant for royalty. He placed me on a bed the color of roses and began to ravish me with his unhinged energy.

I let myself fall into him, his strength, taste, and unquenchable desire for me. For the first time in my life, I’m present, letting go of what was, what I wish would be. It’s all in front of me here. He’s laying on top of me, kissing me delicately as I writhe beneath him, needing him like I need air to breathe.

“I love you so much, Varzig,” I whisper over his lips.

“My gods,” he whispers. “How I love you, Tessa.”

I know that I’m in store for some realm-shattering lovemaking as I feel him once more rip at my dress. The tearing sound is abrupt and sexy, and I know I won’t be needing those villager garments anymore.

TWENTY-TWO

VARZIG

I can’t believe I have my beauty here with me, in my realm, and on top of all of that, I have been promoted to King’s guard! It’s an honorable position and one that would not require me to travel around to other realms very often.

Which means I will have my bride, my delicious woman, with me most of the time.
