Chapter One

Ysenia

Leaning back in my office chair, I pinch the bridge of my nose. For hours I have been rapidly clicking away at the keys on my laptop. The seller’s documents weren’t due for another two days; however, I liked to be ahead of the game. It was one of the many reasons my business was successful.

Geeze. Modest much, Yesenia?I groan internally.

Knock. Knock.

I turn my attention to the open door and find Hayva, my receptionist, standing in the doorway. She points at her watch and smiles.

“Lunchtime, Boss,” she says sweetly, in her Jamaican accent.

“I know, I just need to–” She frowns and shakes her head, making me stop mid-sentence. “I’ll get back to it after lunch.”

“Sounds good,” she smiles victoriously then turns and walks away.

Hayva Allen has been working for me for the past three years. And every day I have thanked my lucky stars for having hired her. Not only is she amazing at clerical work but she also understands me one-hundred percent. She is more than a receptionist. She’s become a great friend.

Two quick clicks and the document is saved, and I’m closing my laptop. It’ll all be there after lunch. Or so I’m telling myself; otherwise, I’m not leaving the room.

“Food!” Hayva shouts from the front office.

“Yes, Ma’am,” I giggle before grabbing my purse and walking out of my office. Hayva is waiting by the door, holding her purse.

“I’ll drive,” she smiles, dangling her keys. The hairs on the back of my neck stand and my stomach knots. “Oh, don’t look at me like that, Boss.”

“We could just walk.”

“Walk?” she gasps. “Why on Earth would we walk?”

“So we’d make it there in one piece,” I mutter.

“Ha! You’re a funny lady.”

“Hayva, your driving scares the hell out of me.”

It’s the truth. I’d feel safer juggling axes or sticking my head in a lion’s mouth. She swears she passed her driver's license test on the first try. But I think she bribed the guy!

“You are just too soft,” she rolls her eyes and waves a finger angrily in my direction. “I’ll have you know that I haven’t had any accidents in over three months.”

Three months,I repeat to myself.

For most drivers, no car accidents in three months is typical; however, Hayva isn’t most drivers. She’s a maniac on the road. Every time I ride with her, I say a silent prayer to the road gods and ask them to let me arrive alive.

“You have that look on your face,” Hayva grumps.

“Hayva, you drive like a blindfolded demolition derby driver!”

Her face turns into one of confusion. She cocks her head slightly and shakes her head.

“I don’t know what a demolition derby driver is, Ysenia. What is dis’ derby?”

I can’t help but smile at her accent as it starts to pour out heavily between her lips. Any time she’s super excited, angry, or sad her accent is thicker than butter. It’s the cutest thing.

“You’re so cute, Hayva,” I smile and then wink at her before heading outside.

Hayva follows me outside. She’s muttering something but I’m not paying too much attention. I’m busy fishing my keys out of my purse so I can lock the door.
