“Yes, oh,” she grins. “You’re cute when you blush,” she teases.

“Okay. You’re having way too much fun at my expense,” I laugh.

“I can’t help it if you make it way too easy.”

“True,” I sigh. “Well, I guess I should apologize for assuming…twice.” I hold up two fingers and groan.

“No need. I’m flattered that you think I’m pretty enough to have both sexes. Men and women,” she stifles a laugh.

“You definitely are,” I reply thoughtlessly.

I start to panic thinking that I’ve crossed the creep line; however, her cheeks pinkening, settle my nerves.

“Thank you,” she says softly.

“Just being honest.” I turn in my seat and face forward.

Silence falls over us. I want to ask her again about going out on a date with me, but I’m too damn nervous about what she might say. Part of me thinks because of her blushing and sweet smiles at me throughout the day that she’ll say yes. The other part of me says I’ve lost my damn mind because there’s no way a beautiful woman like Ysenia would waste her breathe going on a date with me.

Ysenia’s phone ringing interrupts my thoughts. The display on her car’s dash illuminatesJenna Jenkins.Ysenia and I both groan out loud. We look at each other and laugh.

“Want me to hit ignore?” she smiles.

“As much as I’d love that, she’ll just keep calling back.”

“True. So freaking true,” she shakes her head and then answers the calls. “Hey, Jenna.”

“Ysenia!” Jenna sobs. “You have to bring Miguel back. Don’t take him to the airport. Please. I’m begging you. I know I’ve been a shitty friend to you, but please, don’t let him go back to Italy.”

Dramatic much?I was starting to remember just how temperamental my little sister was.

“Jenna, he–” Ysenia begins.

“Ysenia, whatever you have to do to keep him here, youhaveto do it!” Jenna shouts. “He likes you. Flirt with him or something.”

Ysenia’s eyes widen. She looks like she’s seen a ghost. I, on the other hand, probably look like a ghost because all color is draining out of me. Jenna is killing me. She’s basically pimping me out to Ysenia, not that I’d mind but holy hell! Not pimped out by my little sister.

“A kiss would probably keep him here for like eternity,” Jenna continues.

I should just jump out now. End my misery.

“Jenna, enough!” I growl. Ysenia startles and I offer her an apologetic smile. “Sorry,” I whisper. She nods politely but doesn’t speak.

“Miguel, I just don’t want you to leave. My wedding won’t be the same if you leave. Don’t be mad at me for what I said to Ysenia,” she whines. “I just don’t want you to leave.”

“I’m not leaving. I’m going to a damn hotel to get some rest,” I pinch the bridge of my nose and take a deep breath. “Please, for the love of God, don’t call Ysenia unless it is wedding related. She doesn’t need to be dragged into our family drama. Okay?”

“She’s my best friend,” Jenna retorts.

Ysenia makes a face. I can’t quite determine what it means and it only lasts a second.

“Well, best friend or not, she doesn’t need to be in the drama between mom and me,” I say, lowering my hand down to my lap. “Please, do me that favor and I’ll call you in the morning.”

“Fine,” Jenna huffs. “Ysenia, I’ll see you tomorrow?”

I turn my attention to Ysenia. She is gripping the steering wheel. Her chest is raising and lowering at a rapid pace. She looks anxious.

“Jenna, you’re breaking up,” I interjected, hoping to spare Ysenia. “I think we are in a dead zone.”
