“Did your feelings change?” he blurts.

“What?” My words are so faint, that I doubt he hears me.

“Do you still like me? If I asked you to be my girlfriend, would you say yes?”

“Miguel,” I take a deep breath to ground myself. “What’s gotten into you?”

“Do you realize you answer my questions with a question each time?” he chuckles. “Spending time with your parents made me realize that I missed out on something great. I was a nervous wreck as a kid whenever you were around. I would try to talk to you and mess up every time. You’re my kryptonite, Ysenia.”

“Kryptonite is a bit strong. Maybe I was just your little sister’s annoying friend, who you wanted to avoid?”

He kisses my hand softly and then holds it against his cheek. He smiles.

“Never. I never wanted to avoid you. I made every attempt to see you when you were at the house,” he chuckles faintly. “I drove my mom and Jenna nuts.”

“They both knew?” I gasp.

“Not at first. I tried to hide it,” he chuckles. “I was so horrible at beingnonchalant. So damn horrible at it. My mother yelled at me so many times. I thought my ear was going to fall off.”

I can’t hold back my laughter. Poor little Miguel getting his ass handed to him by the ruthless Marcia Jenkins. I had seen her many times rip Jenna a new one. The woman held nothing back.

“You poor thing,” I clap my free hand over my mouth to contain my laughter.

“You feel sorry for me but you’re laughing? I don’t know if I believe you, Ysenia Copeland” Miguel grins.

“Well, Miguel Mancini,” I lean closer to him. Our faces are now inches away. “... I’m not a liar.”

“Then I can ask you anything and you’ll tell me the truth,” he says softly, leaning closer to me. Our lips brush across each other.

“Anything,” I whisper.

“How do you feel about me now that we aren’t kids?” He cups my face gently with his free hand and then kisses me ever so softly.

It’s like a kiss out of a dream. A kiss that melts away every wall I have ever put up. A kiss that makes me feel like I’m the only woman in the world. A kiss that pieces together all of the broken pieces. The perfect kiss.

“I’m going to sound crazy if I tell you,” I whisper, leaning my forehead against his.

“Want me to go first then?”

“First?”

“First as in I tell you how I feel about you and then you can say–”

Plunge. Take the plunge, I coax myself.

“I’m in love with you!” I blurt before my nerves can get the best of me. Once in a lifetime leap of faith.

“What’d– What did you say?” Miguel asks, pulling back just a little to where we can look each other in the eyes. He looks utterly shocked, but at least he doesn’t look repulsed.

“I said…” I close my eyes, take a deep breath, then open my eyes once more. “I said, I’m in love with you.”

His expression isn’t readable. It’s like staring at an emotionless statue. My stomach begins to knot. Regret rises inside me. My words are something I can never take back.

“Do you want me to leave?” I whisper, lowering my eyes to his t-shirt. He lifts my chin with his finger. When our eyes meet, he smiles.

“Ysenia, I’ve been waiting a lifetime to hear those words,” he says softly. “An entire lifetime.”

“Really?”
