“You what?” How the hell was she going to explain to George about the missing suit. She put her hand to her temple as if in pain.

“Don’t worry, just tell him you went through his clothes.”

“But I don’t ever go through his clothes.” Things were about to get complicated.

“Always time for something new.” She grinned broadly. “You have learned that recently.”

“It’s settled, then. Dress up, darling, we’re going out tonight,” said Vickie with a cheeky grin and pushing away any concerns. “This time, it’s going to be fun.”

Chapter 9

“What are you doing here?”

Vickie froze in the hallway and dropped the shopping bag by her feet in shock as she looked into the parlor to see George sitting in the winged chair, legs crossed, reading a thick medical book.

George glanced up from the book. “I do live here from time to time.”

“I mean…” she paused. She’d spent the last few hours shopping with Ruby and had bought a rather stunning new suit she could wear tonight. Fortunately, the suit was left with Ruby, who was coming later, and then they would go to the Port together. What was in her shopping bag was a new outfit for herself.

“Shouldn’t you be at the hospital?” asked Vickie, trying quickly to order her thoughts.

“Shouldn’t you be running your private eye business?” shot back George.

“I was.”

George raised his eyebrows and glanced at her shopping bag. “Last I knew shopping wasn’t helping clients.”

“You never know,” she said demurely. She picked up the shopping bag.

“I do know.” He snapped closed the book.

Vickie jumped. She had the dreadful feeling that George had discovered all about the Black Hearts’ invitation and Ruby’s involvement. She couldn’t let that happen. Not when there was one more chance to blow the cover on the club tonight and find out what was really going on.

“Well, I do have a very new dress I could show you,” she looked suggestively. “I could try it on if you like?”

“Now, that sounds like something I’d like to see.” George grinned, putting down the book and standing from the winged chair. He wore plain black pants with a cavalier black and gold tapestry-designed vest over a white shirt, and his hair was a little ruffled as if he’d had a big morning thinking. He’d removed his neck scarf, and it was draped over the arm of the winged chair.

Vickie’s heart fluttered as she saw how handsome he looked. The gym workouts he’d recently started were increasing his attraction levels, which were now through the roof. She grinned coyly at him.

“I’ll just be a moment.” She picked up the bag and went to rush upstairs to get changed. She wanted some adult fun with him, but doubt was growing in her mind.

George grabbed her by the arm and stopped her from going down the hallway.

Her pulse increased as she gazed into his eyes. She was wondering what he might have in mind and if it would involve the vibrator. Or was there some new sex toy he wanted to try out? Her thoughts collided. She needed a drink to take the edge off the doubt. This wasn’t like her at all. She knew damn well she could trust George. His past didn’t matter. Yet, the questions were there mounting in her mind about to stop her from a playful sexy time with her husband.

He tugged her inside the parlor and locked the door behind her.

“George,” she breathed heavily. They couldn’t risk playing here in the front room of the house. Who knew what clients might turn up, and there were the servants too.

“I’ve made sure we’re alone,” murmured George as he pulled her into him. The heat of his body exploding over hers caused a pleasant sensation to ripple through her body.

“How… what…” The questions burned into nothing as his lips pressed against hers, his tongue teasing her mouth open to receive his soft kiss. She made a yielding sound and leaned into his body, dropping the bag on the floor and lifting her hands around his waist to hold him tight.

“Doesn’t matter, but we don’t have long.” He looked deep into her eyes.

Suddenly, she couldn’t go any further. Vickie felt a chill through her. The question about Miguel dominated her mind.

I won’t ask him.
