“I wouldn’t tell anyone my dreams, that’s so personal,” said Vickie.

“Oh, it’s not that personal.” Ruby waved her hand flippantly as if dismissing what Vickie said. “They have had tarot cards and palm readings.”

It all sounded like poppycock to Vickie. She believed in the sciences, not Spiritualism. Yet, she had a yearning to go. George wouldn’t at all be pleased if she went without him. He’d deem it too dangerous even though she was now well trained in self-defense. It was sweet that he felt the need to protect her.

Then a daring idea came to mind. She looked up at Ruby, their eyes locking. She might not deliver on the tea party, but this was going to be much more exciting.

“How do you feel about dressing up as Dr. Wenderlen tonight?”

Ruby gasped, and her hand moved to her chest. “Vickie, that’s a brilliant idea.”

Vickie smiled. “I thought you’d like it.”

Chapter 2

“You’re a bit too curvy to pass for George,” mused Vickie. She sat at the end of the bed in George’s room, a number of his suits and shirts strewn out on the mattress.

Ruby turned around in front of the full-length mirror. She wore a light blue shirt with a paisley vest that caught the light in its shiny material and at least distracted the fact that she had feminine curves and wasn’t at all a man, let alone George. Ruby wore a matching neck scarf that fluttered under her chin stylishly and covered her feminine neckline. The outfit was finished off with a dark blue pinstripe suit with the lowest-heeled shoes Vickie owned. Naturally, none of George’s shoes fit, and Ruby didn’t own any shoes without heels.

“Do they even know what George looks like?”

“No idea, but if they don’t, maybe this could work.” Vickie shifted on the bed that had become as much hers as George’s. Only a few months ago, they were firmly in their own bedrooms, separated, looking at divorce, but now she couldn’t imagine spending the night in bed without him.

“I think it’s worth a try.”

Vickie was beginning to have her doubts. As the afternoon waned, her curiosity had grown, and since George was working late, helping Ruby dress up like him to go to an elite secret club was just the type of thing a private investigator did for fun. What had been even better was that they had managed to rush into the city to buy a few wigs, a much-needed addition to her private investigator disguise tool kit she could use in future cases. A short, black-haired wig now covered Ruby’s long thick hair, making her appear more masculine as long as you didn’t look too long at her facial features.

“We really should’ve done your makeup professionally,” said Vickie. “To bring out more of a masculine facial structure. They can do that, you know.”

Ruby shrugged her shoulders. “No time. I think we have done fine.”

“Let’s hope it will be dark in the club.” Vickie figured dim lighting might be the only way they could pull this off.

“I’m sure it will be.” Ruby did another turn, looking at herself in the mirror one more time. She flicked her wrists and held the edges of her jacket, turning to face Vickie. “Shall we go, darling,” she deepened the tone of her voice.

Vickie stood and held out her hand. “Yes, but you might need to keep quiet, too, tonight.”

Ruby rolled her eyes. “No one will notice.”

“Let’s hope so.”

Ruby took Vickie’s hand and spun her in a circle. Her cream lace dress flared out. A brown cincher highlighted her hips and bustline. It had been much easier to get ready as herself, instead of trying to make Ruby appear male.

“I think you should’ve made more of an effort,” winked Ruby.

Vickie glared at her friend. “Ruby, seriously.”

“I’m getting into character.”

“George does not speak to me like that.”

Ruby laughed. “I don’t know that.”

Vickie rolled her eyes. “Another reason for you to keep quiet and let me do any talking tonight. Let’s just tell people you’ve lost your voice.”

“Don’t you dare.”

“Best behavior, then. You’re a well-regarded doctor, and I don’t want you doing anything that might destroy his or even my reputation tonight.”
