Kodiak nodded sharply, a knot in his gut tightening. The events that had transpired at the Blood Moon Nightclub bothered him, like he had missed something. Or maybe that was guilt because Tamaska had been attacked.

“I will.”

“Your team’s been waiting for you.” Olcan paused. “I sent them off on a small mission, but they should be back any moment.”

As if they’d been summoned, voices approached the clubhouse.

Kodiak growled as he felt his wolf push to the surface, begging to bare its teeth.

Olcan might be alpha, might have been a good alpha, might even still be a good one, but he was failing. Kodiak knew that.

The fact his leader let his fears and feelings in the way of the bigger picture wasn’t a good sign. Sure it was part of life, but in circumstances like these, those fears and emotions were dangerous.

He wanted to point out humans were involved, being threatened. But he couldn’t. There was no way he would win that argument because of Tamaska. He’d broken the one rule they needed to live by, to not become intimate with humans.

Olcan knew something had happened. He’d smelled it. But Kodiak wasn’t about to tell Olcan that Tamaska had seen Kodiak transform and now claimed to hate his guts.

That was just adding to the mess.

“You better go and instruct them. Or do you need them to teach you a thing or two since you haven’t been around?” Olcan nodded towards the door.

“They all have jobs to do, but for your sake I’ll check in and see if they’re on track.” Kodiak said, the warning clear in his tone.

Olcan bared his teeth in warning. “Kodiak, you go too far.”

“Or maybe not far enough.” Kodiak shrugged and turned.

What he wanted was to give in to the urge and take Olcan out. He wanted to rampage against the vampires. He itched to track Tamaska and make her admit she was his. And, of course, keep her safe.

But he didn’t.

Instead, he went to speak to the others.

He had a job to do.

And he’d keep his pack and Tamaska safe.

No matter what.

Kodiak

Kodiak marchedinto the meeting room on the other side of the changing room, roiling from his encounter with Olcan. He clenched his fists to keep his wolf from pushing out in an explosive rage. It was there, in his center, and something that, the moment he walked from the leader, stirred back to life.

But that rage needed to stay buried deep. It was time to focus. His loved ones’ lives depended on it.

The meeting room was a decent size, enough to fit all the members of the Shadow Pack when necessary. Over the last few years, they had only needed to meet there when discussing where to spend their money and how to face the future with dwindling numbers. If only they hadn’t taken their peace with the vampires for granted, they might have avoided falling onto their back foot and scrambling to figure out what the fuck was going on.

The other meeting was more ritual, and one where they met outdoors to be at one with nature, to bond more deeply to the elements, to their wolves.

Anything said in those meetings held great meaning. And he…

He had promised the opal.

There was ample room here for the small team to congregate. Kodiak winced as their annoyance filled the space. Annoyance at him. He’d kept them waiting, and Olcan had no doubt wasted their time with whatever mission he’d sent them on.

They wanted to get out there and look for vampires. Their inner wolves wanted a fight.
